Coaching Consideration

Hi everyone, I’m prepping for MBB interviews and considering hiring a coach since my previous solo ride attempts didn't go well. The challenge is that 5 sessions would cost roughly a month’s MBB entry-level salary in my country, so it’s a significant investment. I’m curious on how much did hiring a coach actually accelerate prep?

Also, do coaches here sometimes offer packages other than premium bundling? I want to make sure I get the most value if I decide to go this route.

Hi there,

I would recommend that you first look at coaches who are just starting on preplounge with few coaching sessions and positive feedback from users. Given that they are trying to get reviews and prove themselves, they might be willing to offer you a bundled price that would work to your advantage.

Hey!

A coach can speed things up a lot, but it really depends on who you pick.

Many coaches were working students or never actually worked at MBB, come from other firms and coach MBB without really knowing the process... - my honest experience.

So choose carefully. I offer a smaller and more focused package and bring experience from McKinsey plus BCG, RB and boutique firms. If you want, we can talk briefly first so you see if it is a good fit.

best, Alessa :)

Hi there,

Coaching can definitely speed things up, but the value really depends on what your bottlenecks are. A good coach helps you identify exactly where you’re slipping, gives targeted drills, and saves you a lot of time guessing what to fix on your own. That said, it’s a big investment, so you want to be sure it matches your needs. Many coaches do offer smaller bundles if the premium packages feel too much.

I suggest you speak to a few coaches and ask what their study plan they suggest, and see who's style fits you.

hello!
I can understand that cost is definitely a consideration when working with a coach - but it can get you to your goals in a more holistic manner.

If you think about the analogy of going to the gym to get fit. Can you do it alone? Yes, you can. You will need to be that much more diligent and play your own coach (e.g., do the research, determine what good form looks like etc.) Can you achieve your goals faster and more sustainably with a hired coach. YES. The coach that you hire guides you to skip the pitfalls, bring advice and be a support on the way.

Regarding packages that are less than premium bundling. I would be happy to have a chat to see if we can find an approach that is doable for you.

You don’t hire a coach to “accelerate prep.”
You hire a coach because your solo prep clearly isn’t working, and you already know that.

The numbers you've given represent an incredible ROI...which I'm sure you'll know to calculate thanks to casing!

A top coach taking your chances from 5% to 50%. That means your expected value calculation is= 45% times salary

So, you earn your money back from an expected value perspective in 2 months

And that's not even accounting for the area under the curve of all of your future income earning uplift (you need to NPV this out)

Of course, make sure you aim for a top coach that actually can defend their success rate.

And, remember, it's not about accelerating your prep...it's about learning how to think like a consultant, how to actually understand frameworks, cases, etc. Forget "acceleration". You're not doing it right, and need someone to show you how. It's that or...no offer?

Hi there!

Coach prices do not necessarily translate to low vs. high quality. Personally, I don't think a coaching session should cost $300 or $400 (although I do understand the financials behind the logic, considering both seniority and the time a good coach really dedicates to support a candidate, which goes way beyond the single 60mins... not talking about simple mock sessions here, but real mentoring and support).

Regarding "acceleration"... its much more than that. Yes, it saves you time. But most often, it's about getting you on the right track, with the right mindset. It's about being highly effective. And to be honest, good coaching (for both the case and PEI) can be life changing, as there are learning that will stick for life. You will start thinking as a strong consulting, with strong problem solving skills. You will know how to communicate your experience and sell yourself in an effective way. That makes a huge difference not just regarding getting into consulting - but in your whole professional life.

Simply because my motivation is to try to help anyone get into consulting, and not just those that are coming from already privileged backgrounds.

That's why I insist on having more affordable prices, despite being one of the most senior coaches around here.

So feel free to reach out if you want to discuss a package that provides strong support and is at an affordable price.
