Case Coaching

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to start my second cycle of MBB applications in a few months (I reached R2 for one firm in my previous cycle and stopped after R1 for two others).

I noticed some coaches offer a free intro call, and I’m wondering what that typically includes. Is it more of a diagnostic session where coaches assess coachee's current level and suggest a prep plan, or more of a general intro to their coaching style and offerings?

Also, how many sessions did coachee typically take to see noticeable improvement?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

A free intro call with a coach is usually a short session (15 minutes) meant to understand where you currently stand, what your goals are, and what kind of support you need. Most coaches will ask about your previous interview experience, how you approach cases, and where you feel least confident. They’ll then outline a potential prep plan and explain their coaching style so you can decide if it’s a good fit. It’s not typically a full diagnostic case session, because that would be challenging in just 15'. The best option for that would be to book a regular session for that, so you can also receive detailed feedback.

In terms of results, people usually start seeing clear improvement after 3–5 focused sessions, especially if they practice between sessions. Those with prior interview experience (like you) often progress faster because they already know the basics and can focus on refining structure, synthesis, and communication.

Great that you’re thinking ahead — and it’s smart to treat this second cycle with more structure.

The intro call is usually a lightweight, get-to-know-you session — focused on understanding your background, goals, and where you’re coming from in your prep. It’s not always a full diagnostic (that often happens in the first paid session when the coach sees you in action), but it helps the coach gauge fit and start shaping a plan tailored to you.

As for number of sessions — it really depends on your starting point, especially if you’ve already been through R2. That said, 3–5 sessions is a common range to see noticeable improvement, especially if you’re targeting a specific gap like case structuring, synthesis under pressure, or final round polish. More reps may help if you’re rebuilding confidence or reworking your narrative.

Hi there,

Each coach uses the free intro call a bit differently. Some treat it as a quick diagnostic, others as an intro to their style or prep plan.

Personally, I use the free call mainly as an alignment session — to understand your goals, timeline, and where you currently stand so we can make the first full session as targeted and valuable as possible. That way, we skip the generic overview and jump straight into what will move the needle fastest for you.

Most candidates start seeing noticeable improvement after 3–5 focused sessions, especially if they practice actively between them.

Happy to help you prep – feel free to reach out!

Best,

Hello!

A good coach should cover:
-Intro on you  (understand who you are, where you're at in the casing journey, what your objectives are)
-Intro on them (share their experience (corporate, consulting, coaching)
-Ways you can work together (their offerings)
-Their coaching style

Ideally all of these things line up to develop a strong rapport to tackle your goals!

In terms of progress it will depend on how much capacity you have for casing/review/practice, what duration you're working with (how long before interviews etc.) and how much foundation you had before working with a coach.

These are unique to everyone's context. In addition, some progress faster and some people take a little more time - the goal is successful interviews and an offer, so it doesn't matter if someone did x cases or y cases :)

Hope that helps and happy to chat further if you would like!

Hi,

Theoretically, the intro calls can be used in any way the coach and the coachee would like, as long as both are aligned :)

Normally most coaches will use it as a get-to-know you session and for them to explain their methodology to you.

As for # of sessions, there really is no magic number - that depends on where you are right now and the gap to where you need to be. Given you reached R2 before, it shows that you have some base/potential, but failed to demonstrate what's needed consistently and/or at a level that is required. Based on this, you definitely wouldn't need as many sessions as a person who is starting from scratch, so if I have to put a number, i'd say ~5 sessions typically work for candidates that already have a high base level of performance.

All the best!

Hey there :)

I usually use the intro call to answer all your questions and see if we’d be a good fit. For noticeable improvement, around three sessions are typical, though sometimes even one session can already help a lot if the feedback clicks.

best,
Alessa :)

It's typically a Q&A. The candidate might want to ask specific questions about the coaching style of a certain coach. But I'd say in most cases it's just a vibe check. Don't hesitate to try it. But it's not an actual session to discuss content or to assess the candidate (the time wouldn't even permit it).

In terms of when you should start noticing improvements, I'd say after the first proper session. From this first session, you should leave with a clear plan of what to focus on (and how) in order to improve your performance.

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

Free intro calls are usually to discuss your casing experience to get a quick sense of your skills, highlight areas to focus on, and explain how their coaching works. Think of it as a mini diagnostic plus overview. The number of sessions to see improvement really depends on where you start, how much practice you do between sessions, and how targeted the coaching is, but many candidates notice progress after 3–5 focused sessions.
