BCG X DS Interview Prep – From Industry Background

Hello everyone,

I am applying for a Data Scientist position at BCG X. I have been working as a Data Scientist in industry for the past three years and am quite new to the consulting world.

I have just passed the online assessment, and my test has been validated, so I will have a technical case interview in about two weeks.

The process will include 10 minutes on my background, 15 minutes of live coding, and a 30-minute technical case study. If cleared, the final rounds consist of two technical case studies and one business case.

I would like to prepare as thoroughly as possible. I know this question has been asked many times, but any advice on preparation would be greatly appreciated.

I am also open to coaching sessions if you think that could help, ideally with someone familiar with the expectations for Data Science consultants at BCG or who has experience interviewing or working there.

I am also open to connecting with a peer to practice together.

Thanks a lot for your help!

I interviewed extensively at Boston Consulting Group,  but I wasn’t part of BCG X directly, so I may not be the most precise or relevant coach for this specific process compared to someone specialized in DS interviews.

That said I am still working in BCG as a coach for BCG new hires, including new hires from BCG X, and based on that experience I can share a few high-level observations:

  • Coding is usually not the hardest part it’s more about clarity and handling time pressure well,
  • Business understanding still really matters
  • Structured thinking is key: how you approach the problem often matters more than the exact solution
  • You should be able to explain your reasoning clearly to non-technical stakeholders

Hope this helps, and best of luck with your preparation!
Franco

Hi there,

While I don't coach for the data science roles, my understanding is that there are indeed live coding questions and they do ask you technical questions to test your expertise.

I'm not aware of practice cases though I'm sure if you google you can find some.

In terms of the fit interview, nothing here really changes! Here's some advice for navigating the fit interview: Tell me about yourself

Congrats on passing the assessment. Your DS experience is a great base. The main gap to close is not technical, it is consultative.

Background: skip the CV walkthrough. Share two or three projects where your work had a real business impact. Lead with the result, not the method.

Live coding: expect pandas, sklearn, basic SQL. Clear code beats clever code. Think out loud as you go. Silence is a red flag even when your code is right.

Technical case: most industry DS candidates struggle here. You are not just choosing a model. You are framing the problem and justifying your approach. Practice saying things like "before I model anything, what does success look like here?" That one habit signals consulting thinking.

Business case: learn basic case structuring. Stay calm when numbers come up. You do not need to be an expert, just logical and clear.

Happy to help you practice the technical case if you want. That is usually where the biggest gains are.

10% off 1st session | Ex-McKinsey Consultant & Interviewer | PEI | MBB Prep | Ex-BCG

hey Tom :)

for BCG X the biggest shift from industry is not the coding itself but how you communicate and structure your thinking under pressure, so for the 15 min coding focus on writing clean, simple code while explaining trade offs, and for the technical case think less like a pure DS and more like a consultant, meaning clarify the business goal, define a structured approach, and only then go into modeling choices; what really helps is practicing end to end cases where you translate a vague business problem into a DS solution with clear assumptions and impact, and getting used to speaking your thoughts out loud since silence is usually the biggest weakness

if helpful I can run a very targeted session with you covering exactly this format, including live coding and a DS case tailored to BCG X expectations

best,
Alessa :)

Hi there

Happy to provide a perspective on this. During my last two years in McK, most of my experience was DS related, esp propensity to buy, churn and pricing models, with applications in telecom and banking.

Reach out via the chat and happy to share some more tailored thoughts. But it's wonderful that you already have a clear idea of the interview structure.

Best,
Cristian
