I love that you mention not to use ChatGPT - couldn't agree more. I can assure you this is all written the old-fashioned way, all based on my recent experience. Bain Milan is a unique office, and I'll try my best to answer all of your questions:

• Project types: Like most of our offices, there is quite a strong variety here - from luxury goods to financial services to advanced manufacturing to consumer goods. The best thing you can try and do is reach out to someone from the office to hear their voice first-hand - but there is a good variety. Some people get tagged to an industry even at the junior levels in this office (which is quite different than the rest of the Bain system).
• Strongest industry: I think its probably a tie between financial services and consumer products / luxury goods.
• International staffing: It seems decent but not overly so - I worked in Switzerland with a few folks from the Milan office, so it seems that staffing is not that uncommon.
• Moving abroad: I think this is quite feasible - as usual it will come down to the demand from other offices (for example if the Middle East is doing well they might pull people in, other times it slows down and is more difficult).

To answer your questions:

1. Expect broad exposure given the size of the office. Projects range from pure strategy (corporate and business unit strategy, market entry, portfolio choices) to growth, profitability improvement and cost optimisation, often with a strong PE component too.
2. Beyond PE, the clear strength is consumer and its verticals: fashion, CPG and retail. In fashion specifically Bain Italy is the worldwide reference within Bain, not least because of Claudia D'Arpizio, who is something of a legend in the industry. Financial services and industrials are also strong, well-established practices.
3. International staffing is as common as in other offices. A few years ago Bain Italy was not fully integrated into the global network, but that gap has since disappeared, and you can expect international opportunities with the largest clients they have in the region, or later on, when you are a bit more senior, working abroad for the practice you belong to.
4. Transfers are much the same, fairly straightforward, as at the other MBBs, though as always they tend to favour strong performers.

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your questions:

• First of all, the Milan office has a somewhat strong private equity footprint, so as a Consultant you should expect a meaningful share of commercial due diligence work, often short and intense, next to classic performance improvement and growth projects. On the industry side, consumer goods, retail with a clear luxury and fashion component, financial services are the areas where the office is traditionally deep, which is simply a reflection of who the large Italian clients are.
• Moreover, on international staffing, Milan does staff people across EMEA, but in practice most of your first year will be on Italian clients, partly because a lot of the work runs in Italian. Internal transfers to another Bain office are a real and well used path, however they normally become realistic after roughly two years, they require a good performance track record, and they depend on whether the receiving office actually has demand at your level at that moment. I would advise you not to join with a transfer as your main plan.
• Lastly, on the exact practice strengths, the current project mix and how transfers are handled today, unfortunately no one from outside can tell you for certain, since this changes with every partner hire and every new client. I would strongly advise you to reach out to current consultants of the Milan office, because they will give you the current picture rather than a general impression.

Bain Milan is a strong office, particularly if you're interested in Private Equity, Consumer, Industrials, or Financial Services. As a Consultant, you can still expect a fairly generalist experience early on, with the exact mix depending heavily on staffing and current client demand.

International staffing is definitely possible, although I wouldn't choose an office assuming you'll automatically spend lots of time abroad. Internal transfers are also possible, especially once you've built a strong track record and have a clear reason for the move.
