Citi lateral move

Hi all,

I’m considering a lateral move to Citi’s capital markets team after a year in corporate banking at a regional firm. I’m curious if making this jump now would open better long-term doors or if I’d be better off getting another year under my belt first. Does Citi typically support internal mobility if I want to pivot again later?

If you have the chance to move to Citi’s capital markets team now, it’s worth serious consideration. The brand, deal flow, and network can open more long-term doors than staying put. A year in corporate banking gives you a base, but getting into a top-tier platform earlier usually pays off.

Citi does have a reputation for solid internal mobility, especially if you build strong relationships and perform well. Just be clear on why you’re making the move and what you hope to gain. It’ll help position you for future pivots.

I think Simon makes a strong point. From what I have seen, making the move to Citi’s capital markets team now could give you much more leverage in the long run than staying another year in your current role.

A year in corporate banking already gives you a good foundation. I know people who made a similar switch after around 12 months and said the step up in learning, exposure, and overall platform at Citi was huge. Capital markets moves fast and the earlier you get into that environment, the sooner you start building that skill set.

As for internal mobility, I have heard good things. Citi tends to support it, but it really depends on how well you position yourself. If you build a strong track record and are clear about your interests, teams often take notice.

If your long-term goals are more market or product focused, I would lean toward making the move now. Happy to help you think through what to highlight in your story if you decide to go for it. 😊
