I have an offer from a Big 4 firm in Transaction Advisory but want to eventually move into IB. How hard is it to lateral in, and what’s the best strategy to make the switch?
Move from Big 4 Advisory into investment banking?

First of all, congratulations on your offer!
From my perspective, transaction advisory at a Big 4 provides a solid foundation for moving into IB, but the transition can be competitive. Your best path is through valuations or financial DD, as these align closely with IB skill sets. Strong networking is essential, so start building relationships early, as many lateral hires happen through referrals. Additionally, refine your technical skills, particularly financial modeling and deal structuring. After 1-2 years, opportunities at boutiques or mid-market banks become more accessible, with the potential to move up from there. I'v seen colleagues make the move, so the transition is abolutely possible.
If you need any support on the way, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Hey There!
Moving from a Big 4 Transaction Advisory role into investment banking is definitely possible, but it requires a strategic approach. The skills you gain in advisory—like financial analysis, due diligence, and working on transactions—are highly relevant and can give you a strong foundation. However, investment banks often look for candidates with direct deal experience and a clear understanding of valuation and modeling, so you’ll need to build up those technical skills and tailor your experience to highlight how it aligns with IB work.
The best strategy to make the switch is to leverage your current role to gain exposure to deals and financial modeling, while also networking extensively with bankers and recruiters. Prepare thoroughly for technical interviews and consider additional training or certifications if needed. Demonstrating your commitment to the transition and showing how your advisory background adds unique value will help you stand out. Being patient and persistent is key, as lateral moves into IB can take time, but with focused effort, the switch is achievable.
