Roland Berger Case: Onlinestar
Onlinestar, an online retailer of furniture and garden products (core business), has grown significantly in recent years as a result of an expansion of its product portfolio. The company mainly imports goods from Chinese manufacturers but also operates its own production of cat lavatories (special business) in Eastern Europe. The company sells its goods via Amazon and eBay, and recently via an online shop on its website. Despite this development, the financial ratios have deteriorated in recent years. In particular, the gross profit margin decreased significantly. Combined with a significant increase in shipping costs, this led to a negative result for the first time in the recently ended fiscal year and a resulting strained financial situation. Against the background of expected stagnating sales for the current financial year, short-term action is required. The board of Onlinestar asks you for an analysis of the reasons for the negative result as well as a derived recommendation for action. As a consultant, you should bring in your knowledge in online trading and develop solutions. In addition, the management board would like to receive a sales and gross profit plan from you for the current financial year.

Roland Berger Answers in Our Consulting Q&A

Downsides of working in consulting

Working on exceptional projects on management level comes with a price – no doubt. You should be aware of alternating, but high workloads and more travelling compared to other professions. However, I think the job itself is rewarding, you get to know various companies and a variety of projects. Sometimes I had to pinch myself about the impact of the projects I was allowed to work on straight after my studies and but not least – it is a lot of fun.

How often do you travel to the client site?

Actually, this depends very much on the project. As I personally do a lot of projects with industrial clients, we work on site a lot. In my current project, for example, I usually travel to the client on Monday evening, and I am then on site until Thursday. On my last project, we either met in the office or worked from home. In general, I believe that the insights gained during the pandemic have made us much more flexible and therefore different working models are possible.

Thanks for your question. Generally speaking, I have to say that no two days in the life of a consultant are the same. The reason for this is of course the different project set-ups, especially with regard to travel.  Personally, I always start the day with a good breakfast. When you're in a hotel with the team, it's always nice to start the day together and just have a chat with the team. The rule is usually: No discussion of project content. Afterwards, we drive to the customer or the office together.  Regardless of whether you're on site or at home, I usually plan my day, look at what deadlines are coming up or what work results I want to achieve. Then there is usually a check-in meeting for the project team at around 9 am. Sometimes the client is also present. Here we discuss the most important deadlines and milestones in the project and set our goals for the day.  During the morning, we normally have alignment meetings with the client or work on our work packages. If you sit together with the team at the customer's or in the office, you usually have lunch together.  In the afternoon you have time to work again or to talk to the customer. We officially end the working day with the check-out appointment, in which we reflect again on the current status, what may not have worked or what else has come in from the customer during the day. Afterwards, we usually go out for dinner together for on-site projects and then back to the hotel.

My HR colleagues screen all applications thoroughly and evaluate the complete profile, that’s why I can’t give you an exact time frame. However, previous experience abroad is certainly beneficial for an internship in the DACH region. In terms of projects abroad, it really depends on several factors, such as the current project situation during your internship. When joining full-time, you can do long-term or short-term assignments abroad. We also have transfer programs that allow you to move abroad for longer periods, and a rotator program - an exchange of employees from different offices. Me personally worked in Spain, France and Turkey in our regular project assignment and with many international colleagues on other projects too.

"Our case studies simulate realistic challenges that our clients may face. You'll be asked to identify key problems, analyze them and propose a structured solution. Usually they commence with a short presentation, allowing you to showcase your communication skills. In order to be well-prepared for the recruiting day, two things are important: Make yourself familiar with a case study situation through mock exams. Be well rested and fully energized on the day where it really matters."
