What does a client facing consultant do?

Hey!

I'm starting my work as a junior specialist at McKinsey next year. I was wondering if anyone can break down a typical day/week on vs off the project?

Thanks!

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on your next/ first career step!

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for a lot of users, thus I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

A typical day or week for a junior specialist at McKinsey can vary greatly depending on the specific project you are working on and your location. However, there are a few general things you can expect:

  • On the project:
    • You will typically work long hours, often including evenings and weekends, to meet deadlines and deliver high-quality work to your clients.
    • You will work closely with your team, which may include other consultants, analysts, and subject matter experts.
    • Your responsibilities may include conducting research, analyzing data, developing presentations and recommendations, and supporting the implementation of recommendations.
    • You may also have the opportunity to work on-site with your clients, which may involve travel.
  • Off the project:
    • When you are not working on a project, you may have the opportunity to participate in firm-wide training and development programs, such as leadership development (even if maybe a bit later in your career) or technical training.
    • You may also have the opportunity to work on project proposals, internal initiatives or pro bono projects.
    • You will likely have some free time to pursue your personal interests and hobbies, although it is important to be prepared for the demands of project work when it arises.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare before your start with McKinsey, please feel free to contact me directly.

Hi there,

Oh boy, where to start…

It all depends on the type of project and luckily, there's no typical week (which is why consulting is so interesting).

I will give you an example of mine, as someone working for McKinsey in Chile:

Mining in Peru: I worked as an Associate on an operations project for a mining client to minimize off-time for their main processing facility during scheduled maintenance, to not unnecessarily reduce output of ore. Every Sunday night, I flew from Santiago to Lima in Peru and on Monday morning to Arequipa. From there I took a bus every day to the mine in the mountains. In the mine itself, as well as later in the hotel, I did a few things (very high level) breaking down in three phases you'll find in many projects:

  • Investigate: I systematically analyzed maintenance processes by going around, observing, making interviews, talking to internal and external experts, etc. to understand where time is lost. I also ran workshops with a lot of operating/managerial staff from the mine.
  • Solve: I spent a lot of time problem-solving with the client and the team, as well as internal and external experts from various functions (engineering, HSSE, transformation, etc.). In the above-mentioned workshops, we would also come up with potential solutions. We even engaged McKinsey QB for some advanced modelling since we had some data to work with.
  • Implement: During the investigatory and solution develop project phase, I would already start implementing small changes, followed by the big changes during the actual implementation work. This is very hands-on work and I interacted with a lot of operational and managerial stakeholders from the client, their existing contractors, and newly involved 3rd parties e.g., new digital maintenance management platform. Changing processes of such massive operations isn't easy, but we got it done.

On Thursday noon, I would fly back to Lima and from there back home to Chile to arrive Friday morning 2AM at home. Friday was then for internal deliberations and planning for the following week. Partner interactions and also fun team stuff was running in parallel to all the above phases.

I did the above projects for about 3 months and was absolutely exhausted afterwards, not least because of all the travelling. However, I learnt a bunch and it had great tangible impact (advantage of working in operations). All in all, one of my highlights during my time at McKinsey.

Hope this example gives you a bit of a flavor of what consulting can be like!

Best,

Moritz

I'm glad this peaked your interest in consulting! It's not always fancy suits and 5 star hotels... It's so much more than that and it's yours to explore and find your place. As we said in the firm "Make your own McKinsey" - this should be the guiding principle to take your career wherever you want to (certainly not always easy but generally true)!

My understanding is this.

On project (at a very high level)

  • Travel to and from client site (depending on which sector you specialise in and how much client travel has jumped back up in your geography)
  • Contribute to structuring and brainstorming at the start of the study
  • Collecting data from clients
  • Contributing to problem solving, model making and slide building

Off project:

  • Helping with BD, meaning writing bids and proposals to win work, as well as helping to draft thought leadership pieces in your specialism area
  • Contributing to company-wide and office-wide initiatives
  • Resting to be fully recharged for the next study

Congrats on your offer. Client interaction is definitely what makes consulting memorable - exciting but also frustrating sometimes. Make sure you get a lot of opportunity to experience this but don’t fret if it doesn’t happen right away. Depending on the business situation, it is not uncommon for juniors to spend some time on internal topics before getting direct client exposure. Good overviews already provided otherwise

Hello!

Super dependent on the engagement! I would say tough than in an average year you will do 30% excel, 30% pptx, and the rest is PS with both the team/leadership and client.

Cheers,

Clara
