What analytical and financial‑modelling skills are essential for roles at Analysys Mason or Altman Solon?

Hello everyone,

I currently work in Big 4 Deal Advisory (M&A) and have just cleared the first‑round interview at Analysys Mason. My final interview, with two partners, including the Managing Director, is next week.

Analysys Mason’s TMT practice (with a focus on telecom) is highly quantitative and relies heavily on Excel‑based analysis. For those familiar with the firm:

  1. Key Models / Tools
Which three analytical models or skill areas should I prioritise for day‑to‑day telecom work?
  2. Skill‑Building Focus
I have a finance background and solid CDD/market‑sizing experience. I’m comfortable with Excel and can follow SQL/Python logic, but I would rather deepen a few high‑impact skills than remain superficial across many. Where should I invest my effort first?
  3. Partner‑Round Preparation
Any specific guidance on fit questions or case‑style problems commonly used in Analysys Mason partner interviews would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your insights.

Congrats on making it to the next round.

For TMT, the following can be expected:

Key models / tools

  • Telecom market sizing and subscriber/revenue forecasting models (e.g. ARPU, churn, penetration curves)
  • Infrastructure cost modelling (e.g. capex/opex breakdown for fiber, 5G rollouts)
  • Competitive pricing and unit economics (e.g. MVNO vs. MNO margin models)

Skill‑building focus

  • Prioritise Excel-based modelling (esp. scenario and sensitivity analysis)
  • Strengthen your ability to triangulate information as it is often sparse

Partner‑round preparation

  • Expect discussion about industry shifts (e.g. satellite internet, 5G monetisation, tower sharing) and how you'd advise clients
  • Fit questions often explore communication under pressure, learning speed, project experience, and desired personality traits vs corporate values

Best of luck!
