Hi,

I have first round (a set of 3 interviews of 1 hour each) interviews with Strategy& Amsterdam for an Associate role coming up in 6 weeks. I am a beginner to cases but have strong business acumen and would like to prepare extensively for these interviews. I was wondering what resources/literature I should use to familiarise myself with cases and content, where to find various cases of beginner/intermediate/expert level, and other preparation I would need to do. If anyone has any experience or insights regarding case interview prep or has helped others land a role at Strategy&, I would love to connect and possibly have 1-2 meetings.

Hi Mahir,

I just helped a candidate to land an offer at S& Amsterdam and know several real questions they asked there.

In terms of how to prepare, I would recommend the following:

  1. Define a calendar for your preparation. Identify how many hours you have before your interview and allocate a time slot for preparation in your calendar for each day, working on the points below. Many candidates need 100+ hours to be ready before the interview starting from zero so you can keep that as a benchmark.
  2. Read Case In Point or Case Interview Secrets for a general understanding of what a consulting interview is. Don’t focus on the structures proposed in the books, as they are not good enough nowadays.
  3. Start reading good MBA Consulting Handbooks – you can find several for free online (INSEAD is a good one to start). Read the cases and try to apply your structure to solve them. Whenever you see there is something missing, upgrade your structure with the new insights. Try to read a new case per day – in this way you will absorb better the information with constant learning.
  4. After the first 5-10 cases in books/handbooks and basic theory, start to practice live. PrepLounge can be helpful to connect with other candidates for that. There is a relevant part of the interview score that is based on your communication, which you cannot practice at all if you read cases only.
  5. Keep track of your mistakes and see which ones you are repeating. If so, try to identify the source of the mistake (feedback from experienced partners would be particularly useful for this). Be sure to focus on both the behavioral part and the case part during the mocks. The case part should also cover market sizing, math and graph analysis.
  6. Before the interviews, be sure to prepare your questions for the interviewer  – a great way to show you prepared in advance and to connect with the interviewer for a good final impression. Ideally, get information on who they are and study their profile to have good questions to ask.

If you want to spend a few hours only instead of 100+ and cover everything mentioned above, I developed a program precisely for that.

I can also share with you real Strategy& questions asked in Amsterdam.

Hi Mahir,

Feel free to send me a direct message and we can have an informal chat to discuss your preparation. I have helped many candidates get into S& recently (past 3-4 months) and over the past year.

To get started in parallel, I suggest following:

  1. Search Q&A forum for Strategy& related discussions and read up. Soak in as much as you can from the discussion threads
  2. Also search the Q&A forum for tips and resources on getting started with case prep. Check out coach Francesco's answers on this subject- one of the best!
  3. Look at cases published on PrepLounge
  4. Get in touch with peers on PrepLounge and start practicing

Hi Mahir,

Here's what I recommend:

1) An initial planning session with a coach: 1 hour with a coach now will have a productivity multiplier effect on all your efforts moving forward. They will figure out what materials are best for you, guide you towards the best ways to learn, and come up with a preparation plan with you.

2) Leverage free resources first: PrepLounge Q&A and case library, Poets and Quants, SpencerTom, Google, etc.). Leverage these options, read-up, and build that casingknowledge

Importantly, read The Economist, the Financial Times, McKinsey Insights, and BCG Insights daily to build up your business knowledge.

3) Case with other PrepLoungers: Casing with other PrepLoungers is free. Not only do you get to practice casing, but you get direct feedback. Additionally, you learn a lot just from casing others. Finally, from other PrepLoungers you'll learn which materials/coaches are helpful.

Hi there!

I would recommend you:

1. familiar yourself with the type of cases you can get https://www.preplounge.com/en/bootcamp.php

2. Practice math!

3. Dont learn any framework by hard, understand rather how to structure a problem and form a hypothesis to prove/disprove with an analysis

4. Practice with peers and take a few sessions with a coach

Feel free to reach out if you need a coach to support you, I am rewarded as a top BCG trainer, training new hires all the consulting skills (including how we create frameworks), as well as experienced coach.

Good luck!

Lucie
