Specialist/Expert role in MBB

How does staffing work for a specialist/expert consultant? Does he/she work on one project at a time as generalist consultants do or does the specialist/expert work on a few projects concurrently but in a  less “in-depth” way?

Hello,

I am myself on an Expert career track and can share my experience: usually as an Expert, you will stay working on cases where your specialized expertise is needed. Occasionally you can work on a strategic case but still in “your” industry.

What, however, differs is, if you start as an expert consultant, you will have greater chances to expand to cases out of your area of expertise, but if you start at the leadership position without previous consulting experience, more likely you will work on cases of your expertise only, because you bring knowledge that can make a huge difference on a case.

As an Expert you can be staffed just for specific help/guidance (below 30%, but then you usually run a few projects at the same time), however, we are often staffed 50%+ on cases including travelling to a client site.

Also as an expert, you are also responsible for content creation, representation of the firm at external events and bridging the firm with the industry.

if you have more questions about expert career track, please feel free to reach out directly.

All the best,
Lucie

Hi there,

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for quite a lot of users, so I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • First of all, you need to distinguish specialized non-/ lower-leadership consulting positions with senior leadership expert consulting positions since the ways of working differ vastly.
  • For specialized non-/ lower-leadership consulting positions, you normally have similar ways of working as generalist consultants yet you are 100% restricted when it comes to the industry or function type. For instance, operations consultants are solely staffed on projects with high levels of operational work and advanced analytics consultants solely come into place when there is a need for this type of work.
  • For senior leadership expert consulting positions, however, you will most probably work on several projects at the same time where your highly focused expertise is required. Moreover, you will most probably also develop research. In the end, while it seems similar to a partner position, you are less required to sell new projects and further establish the client relationship.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on the subject, please feel free to contact me directly.

I hope this helps,

Hagen

Hey there,

Usually, experts support multiple projects at the same time + work on some research pieces for the firm. Due to the nature of their work, they mostly work from their office and are not present at the client site.

For more intense projects that need close expert guidance, it can be that they are fully staffed and are present at the client site. If not, they sometimes fly out to clients for important meetings and presentations.

Cheers,

Florian

It depends on the project and seniority level. They may be staffed full time, or may be supporting multiple projects at the same time.

Hello!

Totally depends, I have been staffed with them full time or part time. Depends on the workload the project needs, as everything.

Cheers,

Clara
