Salary Negotiations after accepting a written offer

Hi,

could you please help me on the decision. I have accepted a written offer for a senior role and I got an another offer with higher salary for same as current role this week. The first company offered less salary but higher role but the second company offered higher salary and same position. I‘m currently serving notice period in my current company and have to join the first company next week. I‘m very much interested to join the first company but they offered less salary so can I negotiate the salary now after accepted the offer?

Thanks

Hi there,

I think this is an interesting question that may be relevant for many people. I would be happy to share my thoughts on it:

  • It is generally not advisable to negotiate salary after accepting a written offer, as it can be seen as a breach of trust by the company and may jeopardize your relationship with them. If you are unsure about the salary offered by the first company, it may be best to communicate your concerns before accepting the offer.
  • If you have already accepted the offer and are serving your notice period, it may be difficult to negotiate the salary at this point. However, you could try reaching out to the company to explain your situation and see if there is any room for negotiation. It is important to approach the conversation in a respectful and professional manner, and to be prepared to potentially receive a negative response.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to address your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Thanks for your response .I had a salary negotiation with my first company after the successful interview stage, t was verbal conversation with HR through phone call. I explained my expectations and HR came back after few days saying some amount less than my expectations, I accepted that and I double checked with her about that amount. Then after few weeks they released offer letter but I was shocked when I see the salary in the offer letter because it was less than what I agreed with HR in the phone call. I tried to contact her through phone and many emails but no response from her. Before I accept the offer I dropped an email to HR about my clarifications the salary not the same what was agreed in the phone call. No response from HR. I was in desperate situation to move job and it was the last day to sign the offer so I accepted. After a week accepting the offer , HR responded to my email saying that was the original salary discussed, so are you not joint with us. I couldn’t say anything. I replied I already accepted the offer and joining.

I attended interview in both the companies two weeks gap. The second recruitment process was little bit slow so they confirmed just a two weeks ago and released offer few days ago and i didn’t sign the offer. The second company is higher than what I asked in the first company.. Now I’m in a situation how to approach the first company.

Once you sign, you agree to the terms. So not a good move trying to re-negotiate with “the first company” at this point.

However, based on your response you've given to one of the coaches' answers, it sounds like the company you signed with does not harbor the most honest folks. It reads like that they have not upheld the agreement of your previous verbal salary negotiation and presented you with a lower offer in written form (which you still signed though for some reason).

So you might want to consider withdrawing completely from that first company and joining the “second company” (not sure about any legal obligations you might already have now though).

Hello,

I don't think they would entertain this since you've already accepted the offer. Also, i'm not sure if it's a good idea to even bring it up because it would show that you are negotiating with the intention of leaving and joining the another firm.

However, if you get another offer 1 year after working at the new company, you could potentially ask them for a raise on that basis.

All the best!

You can't renegotiate your salary once you signed your contract and are starting in one week. Frankly, any negotiating strength you may have will be seen very badly by the company you are about to join.

You signed….

I'm sorry but you can't go back and negotiate this.

It's an extremely bad look if you try and I highly advise that you simply bite the bullet. If you try to re-negotiate quite honestly only bad things can happen. (Disclaimer: Not legal advice)

Hi there,

Signing an offer is final so don't even think about asking. Not only does it have little to no chance of success, it also causes unnecessary stress on the relationship between you and your new employer.

The good news is that total compensation increases quite rapidly as you gain seniority and rise the ranks with the right performance. If you focus on that and play your cards right, you'll be rewarded handsomely!

Hope this helps a bit. Best of luck!
