I want to receive updates regarding this question via email.

Rejecting Offer = Burning Bridges?

Hi, I am lucky enough to have been extended multiple offers from great firms. I wanted to ask whether rejecting offers from firms necessarily means that I'd be burning bridges with them; i.e. would not be able to work with them in the future?

Hi,

you don't have to worry about burning bridges. As long as you stay polite, respectful and honest about your decision this will never go against you, as the big firms understand this is a competitive market - they won't hold grudges.

In my consulting tenure, I had personally experienced 2 colleagues initially rejected the firms offer, only to join years later. Hence, rest assured that the door will not be closed (while you may have to re-do the recruiting process at a later point).

Regards

Hello!

Congratulations! I am sure it was a combo of a bit of luck with tooons of hard work.

Not at all!

People (and particularly good ones) reject offers all the time, it´s all about making it gracefully. It can actually leave the door totally open, and build a connection for the future.

Key: do it on the phone or in person, always.

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

No, not at all. I'd still be super happy if some of the candidates that decided for something else would come back to me and ask for the job offer again :)

That is fine, as long as you are not playing games and are professional (and that don't waste their time on useless negotiations or crazy demands to take the job… and then reject it).

Absolutely not! It will be looked upon positively..being in demand is a good thing.

Be nice, polite and thank them! Keep options open for future.

Congrats and all the best.

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations!

Now, no need to worry at all :) As long as you say no respectfully (i.e. "I was genuinely excited to work with you, but there is another offer than I just cannot refuse. I hope to work with you in the future) then you're fine…no bridges burned!

Hi there,

Nice work!

It's remarkable how anyone is always looking for something to worry about - even in the best of all scenarios :)

You can only accept one offer and that's just a fact, nothing personal between you and the firms. Your genuine regret about this is exactly what you need to transmit when you ring them up to politely decline.

No bridges will be burnt! You did very well and should focus on enjoying your success!

Best of luck!

#1 rated McKinsey Coach

Hi there,

Not at all. Just be polite about refusing their offer, be honest and transparent in telling them you decided to go for another firm and express your gratitude for the opportunity of interviewing with them.

Don't worry - it won't make them angry. If anything, it will make them reflect on why you chose to go a different way.

And congratulations! That's a great position to be in with so many offers on your hands!

Dear candidate,

very well done. It is not a problem at all. Be open and appreciative and explain that you have decided to take another offer in consulting, so they are aware that you are staying in the industry. You would be able to work for these firms later, should you ever want to switch firms.

Best regards
