Question about Interview and Referral

Hi all,

I have been applying to McKinsey for two weeks and still haven't heard back about the next steps. Is there anything I could do, like reaching out to my contacts or recruiter?

Also, I am curious about how to ask for a referral. I generally only ask for a call and thank them in a thank you note without explicitly asking for a referral? Would love to know what is the proper way of doing it. I feel awkward asking for a referral or endorsement, so I would appreciate it if you could offer some good sentences/words to ask for it.

Thank you in advance!

Hi there,

1) Is there anything I could do, like reaching out to my contacts or recruiter?

Unless you know your batch got responses already, I would wait at least another week before following up. Two weeks is not much time to hear back.

If someone referred you and you have a good relationship with them, you can followup and politely ask if they “would suggest any other step” at this stage as you have not heard back.

Alternatively, you can call HR and ask if “they received everything correctly”.

2) I am curious about how to ask for a referral

Ideally you should get the referral before the application, not after. On the other hand, it can still have some benefits if they drop your name to HR, in case they haven't screened your CV yet.

You should ask for a referral indirectly at the end of the call. You can find some tips here:

Hope this helps,

Francesco

Hi Terry, I do a session on CV, Cover and referrals covering everything for those topics and the related scripts. If you don’t need that, common sense should work ;)

Hi there,

Two weeks is nothing considering the recruiting backlog that McKinsey is dealing with these days. So you can relax a bit!

Once you’ve sent the application, you basically just have to wait. If you were to get in touch with the recruiter today, they would tell you exactly that.

As for a referral, this is usually done before applying. In fact, it’s the person referring you that files the application internally in your name. Getting a referral post-application is not possible in the strictest sense. However, you can get someone to endorse your existing application by dropping a note to the recruiter (almost as good as a referral).

As for getting referrals/endorsements in the first place, this is usually preceded by proper networking and relationship building. Asking someone from MBB straight up for a referral after talking to them once is not a good idea and your approach seems quite transactional. Instead, demonstrate curiosity about their work, competence, and a good attitude and they are likely to offer their support. They’re incentivized to do so with high potential candidates. They won’t do it if they don’t think that you have what it takes.

Hope this helps a bit. Best of luck!

Thank you so much! Would you mind sharing some insights about what should I say to ask for endorsement. Appreciate your help!

There’s no such things as universally applicable “exact words” I’m afraid. In fact, your goal is not to be asked but to be offered a referral. To achieve that, you need to build rapport first and the nature of the exchange and the words you use varies on people’s personality and communication style. If you’re not being offered directly, you can always ask a bit more broadly whether they’d be able “support” your application in any way. This includes referral (best outcome) but also gives them the chance to offer support in another way (eg comment on CV) if they’re not quite willing to make a referral. Hope that makes sense!

Thank you! Thing is, my networking always stops with "cold email, networking call, thank you note". No one has offered a referral. Should I generally ask for support in a thank you note? Thank you!

This should come up in the call. An email is too easy to ignore for your contact... Just don't put them too much on the spot by asking for a referral directly, that was my point. Rather, ask more broadly and see what they can offer. Hope it's a bit clearer now :)

Hi there,

Two weeks is ultimately quite a short amount of time!

I would wait another 2 weeks before reaching out.

In regards to referrals, you should do so during the call! There are a few ways to “hint” at a referral, but it depends on the specific interviewer and how the conversation is going.

Hi there,

Give it some more time, you should get a response. In terms of referral you can ask alumni from your school or ex colleagues who can endorse you as a good fit for the firm.

Thanks

To add one point here

It is important to invest in a relationship before asking for a referral, that being said the reason you and many others do not ask for a referral is because it is difficult. You are putting yourself out there and there is a high chance of rejection - many people can and will say no, or they may say yes during the call and then not follow through. That is part of the process and happens to a lot of people. The entire point is to be okay with failure - accept that people will say no for any number of reasons that usually have nothing to do with you and then move on. Eventually you will meet kind people who will be willing to help you in your search for a referral and guide you towards getting the role you want.

Hello!

I don´t really understand what you mean with “I have been applying”, since you only apply once and to one office :)

In any case, two weeks it´s not yet a time to worry, I would give it still 1-2 more -even more now during the summer, when things are slow-. However, if you do have any contacts, you can reach out and kindly follow up.

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

Hello,

As others here have pointed out, two weeks is quite a short amount of time for next steps, and I would also recommend waiting a little more.

Regarding referrals - these are usually used at the beginning of the application process, but an endorsement of an application during the process also helps. I second Moritz's advice on this - you should network and invest in building a relationship with someone at the firm, so that they can get to know you, your interest, and your competencies, to then be able to refer you. If any alumni of your school/college work at the firm, that might be a natural place to start to set up an intro call, tell them that you are applying, express interest in the work and ask them about their experience. Hope this helps!

Thank you! I do have a few people I have made a call and have quite good relationship. I would love to know what specific words I can use to get a referral, maybe in a followup email or in a call next time. Thank you again.
