No news after final interviews - Mckinsey ghosted me?

Hello,

I had my final round of interviews with Mckinsey ( a Western Europe office) on Nov 24th. During the interview, the partner told me that I should be hearing from the HR about their decision the week after since it was a Friday.

Surprisingly, I haven’t heard anything from them since then and now it’s been > 1 month. I’ve also written to the HR but no reply from her.

In the job dashboard, my application status is still in “in progress”.

Does it mean a silent rejection?

Hi there,

This is pretty rare and I feel for you. Typically, HR will ask one of the interviewers to do the call back after each round (regardless of if it is good news or bad news). What could happen is that someone is supposed to call you and they either forgot / got the wrong number (it happens!) or you did not pick up when they called you.

In this case, I would suggest to follow up with HR again. If still no response, reach out to one of the interviewers to ask for feedback and I am sure they will be happy to follow up for you (I assume you get their contacts or add them on LinkedIn after the interviews). Thank you and hope it helps.

Cheers,

David

Hi there,

That's an annoying situation and very untypical of McKinsey's HR and streamlined recruiting process.

There are no silent rejections (at least there should not be and I have never heard of this), especially after the final rounds.

A couple of things you can do:

  • Call them instead of emailing. Will yield an instant answer. Highlight that you have other opportunities to decide on.
  • Do you have any connections in the company that could ask about your case?

As an FYI and a bit of context, I had several of my clients being put on hold in their recruiting process last year as well but it was always well communicated by McKinsey (not a rejection and with a promise to continue once the pipeline opens up again). Some have restarted the process over the last couple of weeks. I also talked to one person who has been waiting for his second round for 6 months with no additional information.

Fingers crossed for a good outcome!

Cheers,

Florian

Hi there,

First of all, I am sorry to hear about your negative experience with McKinsey!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • First of all, it's important to understand that not hearing back for a long time doesn't necessarily mean rejection. Sometimes, delays can be due to internal processes or unforeseen circumstances within the firm.
  • Moreover, I would advise you to follow up again with HR, but this time via a phone call. It's always good to express your continued interest and remind them of your application.
  • Lastly, while waiting, keep exploring other opportunities. Don't put all your hopes on one option, as the consulting world is full of other great firms and opportunities.

You can find more on this topic here: How to deal with a rejection from a consulting company.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there!

I'm really sorry to hear you haven't heard from them.

Silent rejections don't really exist. In that sense, they're more of a system / process error than an actual answer.

One month is indeed long, so I recommend you reach out to them.

In the meantime, I'm strongly encouraging you to apply to more roles. Sharing with you this guide that explains how to build an application strategy that diversifies your risk:

Hi there,

While it isn't promising, it also isn't over yet.

I would call HR, and, if you can, reach out to the Partner (lightly/non-confrontationally of course).

Remember to, no matter what, always keep applying to and interviewing with other firms up until a contract is received/signed.

Fingers crossed for you!

Hi there,

Q: Does it mean a silent rejection?

Not necessarily. At least at McKinsey, such a long wait is unusual though.

I would recommend calling HR to ask for feedback, after 1+ month that’s totally acceptable.

Good luck!

Francesco

Hey,

McKinsey don't do silent rejections, so it's probably just a technical mix-up. There should be some feedback from the firm in some form.

You should definitely reach out to an HR through multiple channels (phone, Linkedin etc.).

Good luck!
Nick
