Hi,

I am a experience professional with many years of experience in upstream O&G.

I am in the recruitment process at Mckinsey for the position of Specialist at Oil & Gas Practice in the Petroleum Asset eXcellence (PAX).

Right now, I received the Imbellus link that I need to complete in one week. After that, I will need to participate in some case interviews with PEI for Round 01 with personnel from this practice.

Do I need to practice cases like the candidates for a general consultant path? or Are the process different from the other areas?  Do you have any recommendations to help me to be successful in the recruitment?

Any comment related to a similar process for experience hire at PAX will be much appreciate.

Thank you.

Hey there,

The interviews for experienced hires at McKinsey do not differ from a generalist or entry-level roles.

For both, you are expected to go through

  • Cases
  • The 3 PEI dimensions

Now for the cases, I have worked with several people in your position over the last 2 months and the variety of cases is 50% function-specific and 50% from a different function/ industry. This makes sense since McKinsey cases in 2021 focus on creativity and communication rather than domain expertise.

At the core, McKinsey wants to see creative ideas communicated in a structured manner, the more exhaustive the better.

Your goal should be to come up with a tailored and creative answer that fits the question. The framework should - broadly speaking - follow these three characteristics:

  • Broad
  • Deep
  • Insightful

Learning certain frameworks by heart will

a. surprise you since you won't be able to use it

b. on average, lead to bad performance during the case

For more info on the McKinsey case and PEI, check out both articles I wrote

PEI: https://www.preplounge.com/en/mckinsey-pei

Focus on the how in the preparation for McKinsey cases, not the what.

Cheers,

Florian

Hi there,

I helped in the past an experienced hire (15+ years of experience in Energy) for an Expert position at McKinsey in the energy practice.

In his cases he got:

  • Cases in 3 out of 4 of the interviews
  • Questions on leadership, creativity and motivation for joining in the non-case interview
  • Standard PEI

Please note this was for a senior position so it could well be you are going to have cases in all your interviews instead.

In case you need additional help please feel free to PM me.

Best,

Francesco
