Mckinsey Knowledge Expert role or General Manager Supply Chain role

Got 12 years of experience in supply chain in orgs in India like Asian Paints, Unilever, P&G etc. SP Jain passout (Premier B school in India) Current role GM supply chain for an International MNC .Current compensation INR 80 Lakhs per annum. Got an offer from Mcknsey for Know Expert role at same compensation. Mcknsy expecting me to become Sen Know expert in 1-1.5 yrs time. Told that it is 100% travel role (within India) . Is it worth it ? I have been told by HR that lot of examples are there in mcknse of people moving from knowledge consulting to integrative and vice versa. Will it be worth exploring this ? Should i stay where i am to go on becoming director supply chain in lets say 6 years of time or take up this role to become partner/senior partner at mcknsey in that much time. There is no motivation from compensation pov. It is largely Mckinsey brand name, associated learning and opening of lot of other doors. Will it make sense to stay at mckinsey for few years , get the brand + learning and move back to industry ?

Hi there,

If I were you, I'd take the McKinsey offer because the minimum that's going to bring (besides the brand) is a set of new experiences that are likely to help you grow.

But what I think is even more important is that you reach out to a couple of people currently doing this role within McKinsey, perhaps even within India and try to get their honest perspective. I'm sure most of them would be happy to get on a quick call with you. Only they would be able to give you an answer with the sort of granularity you would need to make an informed decision.

Best of luck!
Cristian

Hello,

Interesting situation. The answer is really dependent on what you actually want.

Some key criteria for you to ponder over:

1- Family - will this 100% travel job align with the needs of your family?

2- Future compensation - even though the comp right now is similar, I think you can maximize your future earning potential with a McKinsey stint. This can either be in terms of profit share as a partner at McK + bonuses or as you mentioned, coming back to industry at the C suite level. Compare that with the doors you can open without McKinsey from your incoming promotion at your company.

3- Learning - if you're curious to learn and want to take up a new challenge to max out your skills, McKinsey is a great way. You may even get an opportunity to do regular consulting (non-expert) and you may like it :)

Keep networking as much as you can within McKinsey (beyond the HR folks) and take the call!

All the best!

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the McKinsey offer!

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for a lot of users, thus I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • It can be a good idea to consider a role at McKinsey if you are interested in the opportunity to work with a prestigious consulting firm and develop your consulting skills. The opportunity to work at McKinsey can provide valuable experience and exposure, and can also open doors to other career opportunities in the future.
  • In terms of the specific role you have been offered, it is difficult for me to say whether it is worth it without knowing more about the specific details of the position and your personal career goals. It may be worth exploring the role further with McKinsey to understand the specific expectations and opportunities it offers, and to see if it aligns with your career goals and interests.
  • In general, moving from a supply chain role in industry to a knowledge expert role at McKinsey can be considered a significant career change.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on what to do in your specific situation, please feel free to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

McKinsey knowledge expert as long as it is partner track is a good role to consider if you like consulting. I will say that if your annual pay is 80 lacs per annum then you will not get much more monetary benefit being at McKinsey now but your earning potential will be much higher in the future.

On the flip side travel is very painful and your hours will be much longer meaning less time for family and fun.

At the end it sounds like you already have a good role in supply chain so I am not entirely sure what the value proposition is to go to McKinsey for 2 years given your expertise.

Hi there,

This is entirely up to you. Unfortunately we can't really tell you what to do.

Where do you picture yourself?

You need to think about where you want to be and what you want to be doing. From there, see which of these roles best sets you up for that.

Hi there,

If you care for the brand, exciting project and development opportunities, exit opportunities, or professional development with the firm (partner-level), I'd definitely suggest you take the McK route.

Cheers,

Florian
