McKinsey Final round Interview Role Change

I have received an invitation for final round interviews for the role of a business analyst at McKinsey. I have changed my plans and want to continue grad school. Can I ask to change my application and interview for an associate intern position over the summer. Is this a possible solution that they would consider or would this affect my application negatively or my future applications at the company.

Hi Mh,

First of all, congratulations on the interview process thus far with McKinsey nonetheless!

I think this is an interesting question that may be relevant for many people. I would be happy to share my thoughts on it:

  • Since it seems you have already decided to continue your education, I would highly advise you to reach out to McKinsey either way.
  • Best case scenario, they may allow you to convert the full-time interview process into the associate intern position interview process.
  • Even if not, there is a high probability they will allow you to interview later for the associate intern position.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to address your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

If you have already decided that you don’t want to take the full-time role with the original timeline, yes, you can contact HR. Even if there is no option to join for the internship, they should be able to allow to either postpone the interviews or join later in case of an offer.

Good luck!

Hi,

it's just something you can discuss with their HR team. Sounds like it doesn't make sense for you to do the full-time application now anyway since you will attend grad school.

So you would have to cancel your invitation regardless. When you tell them about your situation and your underlying rationale, you might be able to achieve

  • a first round interview deferral for after you graduate
  • a summer associate intern interview invite

You will not be penalized in the future (other than standard ban-periods in case of rejection)

All the best

Hi,

McKinsey is quite flexible as their main objective is to recruit the best talents (I was part of the interviewers squad in Paris Office), so my advice if you really want to change your application is to open the discussion with HR to explain your situation and objectives. Then they will give you the best option for you.

Cheers,

Hi there,

Interesting situation.

I would actually discuss it with HR. They will most likely be flexible enough to adjust the position that you are targeting.

Alternatively, you could still go for the current role and just defer the start date. It's unlikely that they will accept you deferring it beyond a year, however.

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

I agree with Francesco here. If you have already made up your mind…well, you may as well! Ask them and provide the reasoning.
