MBB: Does your GPA during your PhD degree matter?

When applying to MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) with a PhD, your GPA can still play a significant role, but it's not the only factor considered. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

1. GPA Importance: While a strong GPA is beneficial, MBB firms also look at other aspects such as your research, publications, and overall academic performance.
2. Professional Experience: Relevant work experience, especially in consulting or related fields, can significantly offset a lower GPA.
3. Networking: Building connections with current consultants or alumni from MBB firms can provide valuable referrals and insights.
4. Case Interview Performance: Strong performance in case interviews is crucial, as it demonstrates your problem-solving and analytical skills.
5. Holistic Evaluation: MBB firms assess candidates holistically, considering factors like leadership, extracurricular activities, and personal stories.

Having the PhD will be more beneficial than the GPA on that PhD degree, however, it's a data point that can add more weight to your profile. So short answer, it matters... But the long answer is maybe not as much as you think or to a highly significant amount at that level. I have spoken to a couple of MBB recruiters about this

It's a data point but not the only thing that firms will look at. Showing academic excellence is an important factor of your mental horse power. However, it is equally important to tell a compelling narrative that you bring a skillset that is valuable to firms -- problem-solving, communications, leadership, team and  client management skill among others. 

My rule of thumb for candidates: list it if it is high (bold those rewards such as distinctive scholarship, top 1%, etc.), and leave it out if it is low (or not as high). 

It sometimes captures the eyes of recruiters. A real example:  I was pursuing a part-time master when I was applying for McKinsey as an experienced hire. My former company is a teeny startup that no one heard of (with 3 co-founders + me). And I came from a non-target school. The recruiter reached out to me and pointed out that he was impressed that I finished undergrad in three years instead of four (very subtle right?) and noticed I was pursuing a master's degree part-time (also very subtle from my resume). Those were the main reasons he reached out to me.

• First of all, your PhD GPA is probably the most important piece of information about your academic excellence. While you can make up for a lower PhD GPA with higher undergraduate and graduate GPAs, you can only do so much. It's also not a good idea to omit any GPA if it's low, because consulting firms will inquire about it anyway if it's omitted.
• Moreover, however, to maximize your chances of being invited to interviews with consulting firms, you also need to excel in all other relevant dimensions besides academic excellence, such as relevant work experience, international experience, etc.
