How much do MBB care about academic modules?

I am about to start my Msc in Management and Strategy at LSE and had two sets of module choices in mind and would like to gauge your opinion on two criteria:

1. Which will best prepare me for a possible career in MBB

2. Which (if any) will be favoured and whether MBB look at this at all.

My first set of choices specialise in marketing and involve:

Branding Strategy, Pricing Strategy, Financial Accounting

While my second is far more financially oriented:

Managerial Finance, Financial Accounting, Pricing Strategy.

I think I might like to specialise in marketing for my career but I know MBB are general roles at the start. How would you critique these choices against the criteria. Regarding my personal background, I have studied corporate finance during my undergrad but don't believe I have the financial modelling strengths at present that I expect MBB firms to look for.

Hi Danny,

I also went to LSE and know a few people who did your course.

I would recommend that you choose the modules that you find most exciting. Your choice of modules won't have a big impact on whether you're invited to interview, especially since you'll probably be applying for the LSE degree and won't be able to present any certificates yet anyway.

Cheers,

Lukas

The actual content is not too important - they care about your relative performance. Hence, pick what you are interested in, ideally something quantitave here and there too to demsonstrate hard core analytical skills.

Pick what you are good at and most interested in. No one will quiz you on what you learned. There may be a small bias towards more analytical courses (math, stats, comp sci) if anything.

As the difference is only on one course - pick up the set that you are most passionate about. As Francesco stated, University name and your Master Degree will be most crucial. Otherwise, do what you like to do - it will help you the best on your future career path.

Hi Danny,

I agree with the other coaches, you can go for your preferred option.

What they will mainly consider in the selection in terms of the university is:

  • University name
  • Master name

In theory, quant courses are preferred, but if you like more Branding Strategy to Managerial Finance (since the only difference), definitely go for that – it won’t have an impact on the application.

Best,

Francesco

Hi Danny,

The Modules don't matter. The is especially true when comparing the list of 2 you've proposed.

Pick the ones that genuinely interest you the most!

I agree with the other coaches. The actual courses are not important.

Hello!

When thinking about what to take, think about the learning that is going to bring you almost exclusively. It won´t favor -or the opposite- during the recruiting process

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara
