Hi
Do McKinsey automatically place new-starters (BA/JA) on their first project, or is it self-staffed?

Hey there,
Your first engagement in McK is usually selected based on a number of criteria
Not all of those will always be the case and you will work with staffing to get on the right project. Usually, you have much less leeway to plan or decide at this stage.
After the first engagement, you start ‘’building your own McKinsey'' and will more and more find your next engagements yourself via your network and the internal job market.
For my first engagement, I was directly called by a partner as they were screening new hires for a specific industry experience in their resume. I took on the project and from then on built a network and all projects came to fruition organically, without staffing playing a role.
One additional point: In McKinsey, you are able to decline projects you don't want to work on, even your first one. This helps you only work on things that make sense for you. Big plus imho.
Cheers,
Florian
Hi there,
Self-staffing is not a thing! At McKinsey, you have a whole staffing organization that is responsible for placing the right people in the right projects.
Over time, you can influence the process through connections and creating strong pull from Partners etc. However, you can never self-staff. That's not a thing and ultimately a bit dangerous - you have to respect the process.
Hope this helps! Best of luck!
Hello!
Great question, since it changes a lot the game.
It depends on the location: in the US, people self-staff (unless you can´t be staffed, and then you are forced into a project). However, in Europe, in many places you don´t have a say (not only as BA, but also as associate).
Hope it helps!

Clara
Your staffer will work with you, but typically the first project is one where you don't have any choice. Afterwards as you build your reputation you will have more say in where you get staffed.
You will be automatically placed on your first project and really don't have any say.
Hi there,
The staffers usually put you on a project. It's almost never self-staffed since nobody knows you and nobody can recommend you. You basically come as a ‘on-top’ to a fully-staffed project.
Hi there,
In short, first staffing will be done by the staffing team (in most cases). As you gain tenure, experience in a given industry and start to build your network within the firm, you will gradually get more influence on staffing over time.

You will be automatically placed on your first project. You'll have more flex down the line as you build your network/credibility
