I have read mixed opinions on whether I should apply this summer as an ADP or just apply after I finish my PhD? I'm a ware that recruiting in the US is one year a head of time but not sure if this one hold true for the Middle East too?

Finishing my PhD in Spring 2026 and aiming for starting in September 2026, should I apply now or next summer?

Hey there,
If you're aiming for a September 2026 start, I'd apply now if I had the option. Reason being:
- If you're successful now: then you've got the job and can ask for a deferred start date! Mission accomplished! :-)
- If you're not successful now: then you can try again next year this time and still have a chance to start in September 2026, but you'd have gained real valuable interview experience and data points to know where you'd need to improve and increase your chances of being successful next year
So you'd really lose out on anything by applying now. It basically gives you 2 attempts (at worse) to get your Sept-26 start date
All the best!

Probably a bit early. But considering that openings are not as freely available in the market as in old days - you might want to start the hunt/search now itself. Focus on non-committal networking and hit the trigger when your potential referees feel alright.
In terms of preparation - the best thing you can do right now will be:
- Get your CV sorted with a coach
- Get your broad-based FIT answers and Stories prepared and reviewed
- Practice your FIT and Stories well before beginning networking
These are no-regret preparations and will help you with all job applications and interviews.
For case prep - it is a bit too early I would say. Starting case prep this early can lead to burnout and mental fatigue. Ideally you should start case prep around 8 weeks before you apply. This gives you enough runway and also helps keep the momentum strong when going into your interviews.

Hi there,
Q: I have read mixed opinions on whether I should apply this summer as an ADP or just apply after I finish my PhD?
If you have the option to apply now (meaning, you satisfy the criteria for the position), I would apply now. The main reason is that if you fail, you will have another chance in 12 months, so overall, you will have two attempts instead of one.
Regarding the starting period, usually it is not a problem to defer the starting date, so that should be fine as well.
Good luck!
Francesco

Hello there,
Agree with the coaches about when to apply, however I do think you should start case prep earlier, 2 months may be too little depending on the gaps you’ll have to fill. I recommend 4-6months so you can really ace the case by covering with mastery all of its parts (specially structure and math) in a healthy pace.
Count on me to craft a strong CV, that makes all the difference and unfortunately most candidates get it wrong. Happy to chat about it in a 20min free consultation :)

Mari

hey there!
If you’re targeting a September 2026 start, the best time to apply depends on region:
- US: Apply this summer (2025). Recruiting is typically 12–15 months ahead, especially for roles like Associate/ADP.
- Middle East: Timelines are more flexible, often closer to start date. You could apply in late fall 2025 or early 2026. That said, some offices do recruit ahead, so it doesn’t hurt to reach out now and clarify with recruiters.
If you’re open to both regions, applying now keeps options open. Just be clear about your graduation and availability in your application.

Hi there,
Given that you’re finishing your PhD in Spring 2026 and aiming for a September 2026 start, I’d definitely recommend applying early. Most consulting firms, including those in the Middle East, typically recruit at least 6-12 months in advance for ADP roles. Applying this summer can give you a significant advantage, as it not only secures your spot early but also gives you time to focus on case interview preparation, which can take a while to really master.
Consulting case studies can be quite different from academic problem-solving, so starting early will give you a much better shot at landing an offer. It also leaves room for potential internships or networking opportunities that can strengthen your candidacy.
Of course, each firm and region can have slightly different cycles, so I’d also suggest reaching out to recruiters or consultants in the region to confirm their timelines and expectations.
Happy to help you with your preparation - feel free to reach out!
Best,
Evelina

Hi,
I've got one different thing to point out:
leverage the time before you apply and ask for advice from people in consulting firms:
Instead of focusing purely on when to apply, consider using this summer to generate momentum before you apply so
- Reach out to consultants in your target offices or your friend circle or academic circles who have gone into consulting
- request short chats, and express your interest.
Then ask them when they'd recommend applying based on current pipeline needs.
By the time you hit submit, whether this summer or next, you’ll already be a known quantity, which can significantly improve your odds in both competitive and rolling-recruitment markets.
Good luck!

Check with the recruiter.
As boring and straightforward as this might sound, that's always what you should do.
Treat the recruiter as a partner in this journey. They want to recruit you and they are the ones who have the freshest info about the recruiting pipeline, process and any plans or resources.
So get in touch with them and find out. Don't rely on hearsay.
Best,
Cristian
