Experienced hire exploring opportunities in management consulting

Hello! I am an experienced professional in investments. I just applied for a Consultant position at BCG last week. I am usually on buy-side and I've always been interested in the consulting side of the business.

I am generally unfamiliar with the structure of case interviews (never recruited for consulting before) but the scope of it is within my area of expertise (I conduct a lot of business analysis, work with financials, have a CFA etc.)

I received an invitation to do the online Casey test yesterday and had the chance to go through some of the materials on Case Coach today - the deadline is in 4 days.

Any advice on whether I should ask for an extension on completing the Casey or would cramming cases over the weekend be enough at this juncture? Effectively for 2 days, as I probably won't have time to practice much on work days. Would there be negative implications to asking for an extension?

Also grateful if you could share any general interview tips for an experienced professional new to consulting. Thank you!

You have a very cool profile which should make it easy to transition into consulting.

First of all, if you're not prepared, try to postpone it. You can always reach out even for these sorts of tests and tell that you'll be travelling over the coming days, or have an important deadline at work, or anything so they understand that practically you won't be able to do it by the deadline.

Second, don't send additionally applications before you're 70-80% done with the prep - otherwise you'll again arrive in the same situation.

Aside from this, sharing with you a couple of practice materials you might find useful:

Hi Nana,

First of all, congratulations on the invitation from BCG SEA!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, based on the timeline you shared, it's indeed tight to prepare for the BCG Casey pre-interview assessment in just 2 days, especially if you're unfamiliar with the structure. I would advise you to request an extension, explaining that you want to be fully prepared to showcase your best abilities. Consulting firms usually appreciate sincerity and understanding one's limitations.
  • Moreover, given the BCG Casey pre-interview assessment is essentially a case study that you solve on your own, I would highly advise you to focus your preparation on practicing case studies with peers and on your own, as this is the best way to prepare for it.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on authentic BCG Casey sets, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi Jan,

I highly recommend you try to postpone it. If possible. See what they can do.

I also recommend no using case coach. Rather, MConsultingPrep and Francesco have great guides. Additionally, I have 4 of the past real tests if you'd like to see!

But yes, coming into this with 0 familiarity with the process I would highly recommend you ask for a delay not just for the casey test but ALSO for getting case ready (you need 2-3 months ideally if prepping without coaching support)

Hello,

It is always advisable to postpone the interview and be fully prepared for all interviews stages instead of taking your chances, even with the profile as strong as yours. 2-3 months should be enough. To progress quickly, I suggest you take the following approach:

1. Getting coaching when you are a complete beginner to learn the basics;

2. After you've learned the basics, practice cases with peers to polish your case solving process and acquire understanding of a wide range of industries and problem types;

3. Before the interview, ask a few acting consultants to give you cases in a mock-interview format to assess your readiness.

Good luck!
Nick

Hi Jan,

1) Should ask for an extension on completing the Casey? Would there be negative implications to asking for an extension?

If you feel you don't have enough time you can definitely ask. Worst case, they will say no. There are no negative implications related to that.

In case you want to prepare further for the test, I reported some extra info below.

The BCG Online Case (also called Casey Chatbot Interview) is an 8-10 questions test BCG now used globally. It is structured in 2 parts:

  • 8-10 questions to be taken in 25-30 minutes
  • 1 video interview question at the end, where you usually have to provide a recommendation in 1 minute

If you want to prepare further for the Online Case, I created a software simulation replicating specifically the chatbot and one-way video interview.

It includes the following and more:

  • 4 Casey Software Simulations of the Chatbot. These are live chatbots simulating exactly the same chatbot environment of the test (meaning you will receive questions from an actual chatbot with a flow equivalent to the one of the test).
  • 4 One-Way Video Interviews. These come with Artificial Intelligence reports, so that you can see how the software will perceive your performance in terms of voice, speech clarity, energy and more.
  • 2 PDF Simulations of the Chatbot. These are additional tests Casey-style, meaning you will have 6 different Casey Chatbots to train with overall.
  • Free access to 6 PSTs and Potential Tests for further practice.
  • Deep explanation of all the 5 types of questions asked in the BCG Online Case thanks to the complimentary 144-page guide.

You can get access to the software simulation and guide right away at the link below:
