Ecosystem Creation - McKnsiey's Game.

Hello everyone,

I have two questions regarding the first McKinsey's test (Ecosystem Creation):

1. Which strategy do you think should be used? First choose the animals and then see if they can all live in the selected location or first see that the location is suitable for everyone? what will take less time?

 2. Is it possible to use this test on paper and pen - that's how I prefer. Or do you need Excel, otherwise it is impossible to solve?

Thank you very much.

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the invitation from McKinsey!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your questions:

  • First of all, I would highly advise you to first select the area range based on the producers that will be most beneficial for the rest of the ecosystem. However, selecting the specific location on the map should be done last, as it is shown in the tutorial.
  • Moreover, you can use pen and paper for the pre-interview assessment; you don't need MS Excel. However, depending on your skills, you may find it much quicker to use MS Excel.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming McKinsey Solve pre-interview assessment and McKinsey interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

1) The best practice is to first create your animal chain and then select the location. The latter part can be done in 1-2 minutes once the food chain stands since the update of the game a while ago (source: I published the first Solve Game Guide already at the end of 2019 and constantly update it). You will always quickly find a location based on your dominant animal set. Going the other way round would make it much more difficult since you would not optimize for kcal provided when selecting the 3 initial producers to start with!

2) It is possible but a good Excel Solver can make your life much easier.

Cheers,

Florian

Hi there,

1) Which strategy do you think should be used? First choose the animals and then see if they can all live in the selected location or first see that the location is suitable for everyone?

If you can find 8 species that make the chain work, there will be a suitable location. However, for some locations, there will not be sustainable species. Therefore, I would recommend selecting the species first and then the location.

2) Is it possible to use this test on paper and pen - that's how I prefer. Or do you need Excel, otherwise it is impossible to solve?

You can use pen and paper as well if you prefer, however an Excel solver is going to speed up the process. Additionally, sometimes it is not possible to create a sustainable chain, regardless of the combination you use. By using an Excel solver, you can identify this before building the actual chain and save substantial time.

If you want, you can find more information in the guide I created below, including all the games in Solve, including the new Ocean Treatment game:

Good luck!

Hey there!

  1. Strategy: I would argue that it is generally more efficient first to analyze the location to ensure it suits the survival of all selected species. You can then fine-tune your choices based on their specific needs (e.g., calorie intake and compatibility with the food chain). Also, I recommend, checking out some YouTube videos on this topic! They are also explaining some great techniques to excel in the game!
  2. Pen and Paper vs. Excel: While it's possible to use pen and paper to structure your ideas, using Excel or another digital tool is much more practical, especially for quick calculations, tracking interactions, and optimizing your choices based on the data provided. The game’s complexity requires efficiency in handling multiple variables, which is easier to manage digitally.

Additionally, for the second part of the test, strong time management and quick mental math skills will be key to success, particularly in areas like percentage calculations and data analysis.

Good luck with your preparation!

I recently completed the McKinsey Solve game about 3 weeks ago and am yet to hear back. I was wondering if only the successful candidates have heard back yet and if all candidates are invited to Solve?
