Does McKinsey stagger interview invites?

M.D candidate applying to McKinsey’s full-time associate role with two referrals in North America from a target school/ only applicant from my school as far as I’m aware. Heard from some PhD friends that they received first round interviews today in email, but I haven’t heard back at all. On the website my application still shows in progress submitted. Should I still hold out hope for an interview or no?

Hi there,

Yes they do! Don't worry, while it's not great, it's also not out of the game yet.

By the way, you should assume you won't get invited….

I see you said you're panicking.

Well, the most likely scenario is you don't get an interview and you don't get an offer. Like anything in life, getting to #1 is extremely unlikely.

Please don't put all your hopes on McKinsey. Apply to BCG+Bain AND the dozens and dozens of other consultancies out there.

I'm not saying don't stretch/reach/hope for McKinsey. I'm just saying, you should go in mentally prepared for the most likely outcome.

Hi there,

McK interviews are often conducted by individual regional offices. As such, the selection and interview timeline can differ per office. And even within a same office, interviews are spread out. Hence, there are still good chances that you might be invited for an interview :)

And even if you got a rejection at this point in time, you could always apply to a different country / office. I know several people that were rejected in one country based on their CV (i.e. not invited to the first round of interviews), applied then to an office in another country and eventually got the job. The Middle East is booming at the moment ;)

Wish you best of luck!

I don’t think you can draw any definitive conclusions from that, so it is still possible that they will invite you later.

Good luck!

Yes absolutely - they don't do all interviews at once.

I know they stagger interviews of course, but are the invites staggered as well?

They stagger both interviews and interview invites! Fingers crossed for you.

Hi there,

in line with what some of the other coaches said, yes it's quite common for the firm to stagger this way. Hence, would not draw pre-mature conclusions, there is still hope.

Fingers crossed!

Regards, Andi

It's not processed as a “single” batch, but as multiple batches, and they can be reviewed by different people, meaning that just because someone already received an invite doesn't mean you won't receive one as well.
