Do Consulting companies, specifically MBB's appreciate a Master's in Data Analytics?

Would a masters in data analytics give me a leverage to join the MBB's and then perhaps they could sponsor me doing an MBA. I currently do not have the option to do an MBA and an MDA is all I can afford at the moment. I would like to know if an MDA is advantageous when applying to MBB's as like a business analyst for instance.

Hi Michael,

I think you might have previously posted a related Q&A?

Again, don't commit 2 years of your life and a ton of money for a maybe at 1 of 3 firms that each have a 5% acceptance rate.

This also applies to even doing an MBA.

Again, let me be clear (because the past answer clearly didn't really get through to you) - I would even not advise someone to do an MBA because they have the dream of, specifically MBB. (I would advise them to do an MBA if they want to do consulting, in general).

Make sense?

An MDA is going to be great for your career. It is a field in high demand. It is not something that MBB sees and goes “oh wow, we have to hire this person”. Your order of “advantage” is MBA ====> Drop =====> MiM =====> long drop =====> Any other MAster's degree (with MDA being perhaps on the top of this tier).

It will make you more suited for GAMMA or McKinsey Black, NOT generalist.

In general, please don't ignore what people are saying because it doesn't match with your view of the world - listen!

We are trying to help I promise :) (Otherwise I would not have spent 10 minutes typing this)

Ian,

It's not that I do not listen but there are a lot of things that you do not seem to understand and it's probably my fault- I should've explained more.

MBB is not just a dream. I am specifically interested in Mckinsey's Public and Social Sector Consulting. I would like to do some sort of post graduate between 2024-2026.

I am currently an associate consultant at IBM Canada. It is my first year. I do not have a wide selection of masters that I can do due to me being tied to my city for work and I do not plan to leave my work for full time masters therefore my options are very limited for TOP universities in the country. I can do a Masters of Management Analytics and it'll be once a month travel on weekends sorta thing or I could do an MBA somewhere online in Europe perhaps. I Managed to find a top business school MiM Analytics and it is only 12 months while working. I just wanted to know if me doing that is a good move.

Should I just do my MIM then apply for mckinsey as a Junior Associate or Senior BA then let them sponsor me for an MBA later on?

The point is I want to do some sort of post grad between 2024 and 2026 so ya and no I cant relocate.

Hi Michael, no problem at all! This is MUCH clearer :) Alas, my answer is probably going to be unsatisfactory (I'm sorry, but this is a very complicate choice that has to be discussed live to come to an optimal solution for you). Overall, a MiM in Analytics, on weekends, is probably something that will support your career. It is probably a better a better move than a part-time online European MBA. It is not really something that applies to MBB and doesn't really take you on that trajectory directly, though indirectly, like with anything on your resume that's valuable, it helps make you a more attractive overall to employers of all types. You should apply to MBB this year AFTER networking. Then, you should apply again the next year AFTER networking. Then, you should apply again the next year AFTER networking. All the while building up your resume. There is no sure path to MBB, just steps along the way that increase chances. At promotion at IBM and strong experience there is likely the best path for you at the current moment in time given your limitations.

Ya, sorry for the confusion it's my first time posting questions online. I just just graduated and kicking off my career in consulting. Why don't you think an online MBA from Europe is any good? A top university like Imperial in London offers an online MBA which I am considering.

Hi Michael,

I think MDA would look fine on your resume, but it won't be a huge advantage in applying for MBB if you already have a solid resume and experience. It depends on what your goals are really, but if the question is “how can I best use 1 year to prepare for MBB applications”, I would probably suggest doing internships / working full-time instead of master's programs (unless it's an MBA, of course). If you want to do a master's program for other reasons, that's a different question.

Hi there,

Q: Would a masters in data analytics give me a leverage to join the MBB's and then perhaps they could sponsor me doing an MBA.

It depends on the brand of the university. If the brand is good, it could improve your CV and increase your chances.

At the same time, I would not recommend doing a master with the only goal to get an MBB invitation as it might not materialize.

Best,

Francesco

Hi there!

Overall, yes, an MDA will increase your value proposition because it highlights that you have strong analytical skills.

However, it makes you then more eligible for data science roles rather than generalist roles. So it's also worth considering whether you'd want to pursue such roles in consulting.

Alternatively, consider Masters in Management programs which are more targeted at generalist roles.

Best,
Cristian
