New medical student at a T20 U.S medical school. Learned about management consulting from a friend and the idea of it is interesting to me. However, I know that typically they hire MBAs and more business oriented people. Do I even have a realistic chance if I decide to apply in the future? So therefore, question per title. Thanks for any input!
Do big firms like MBBs hire MDs?

Hi there,
Yes, you definitely do.
MDs are actually very attractive for consulting firms because medical schools tend to be very picking in choosing students, so this signals to consulting firms that you are a high-potential sort of person.
I've worked with multiple MDs over the past two years or so. The most important thing is how do you manage to present yourself through your CV to exhibit the sort of skills that are attractive for consulting firms and would then help you pass screening. Feel free to reach out and I'm happy to explain this further.
Also, make sure that you apply broadly, especially in light of the current economic situation:

Hi there,
Q: Do big firms like MBBs hire MDs? Do I even have a realistic chance if I decide to apply in the future?
MBB do hire MDs, I helped a few candidates with that background. How much they do so also depends on the country – in some they are more open to candidates with a non-business background.
Additionally, some other firms specifically focus on healthcare and therefore welcome candidates that worked in that area – some examples are ZS Associates, LEK, IQVIA and ClearView.
I would recommend to look for a referral to maximize your chances when you apply. You can find more on referrals at the links below:

Good luck!

Hi there,
You need to do a ton of research and thinking before jumping into this.
Yes, you 100% can. I'm actively training 2 candidates from a T20 US medical school. I have past medical school candidates now working at MBB. It's more common than you would think!
However, your “the idea of it is interesting to me” needs a lot of firming up!
This is a long and arduous process. You 100% have a chance if you apply but please remember this is going to take a lot of time and work. You have to really want it.
Get networking and speaking to people in the industry…ask hard questions to figure out if it's right for you!

Hi there,
Yes, MBBs hire MDs. I myself know MDs (even after practicing for several years) who have made it to MBB. MBB also hires many other profiles that don't come from MBAs (e.g. Lawyers, Scientists etc).
Naturally then, your next question is “how do I break into MBB?" → Tons of existing Q&A that has been asked on this topic already, but happy to answer any specific questions you might have.
All the best!

You do have a chance. But let's be clear: you said you are a new medical student. It wouldn't make sense to go through many years of medical training if you want to be a business consultant.
But you have to be sure that you really want to do consulting. Well, do you want to work in business, even if not in consulting? If the answer is NO, then I don't think it would be wise to go into consultling. To be a successful consultant, you have to have a passion for business.
Well, and if you have one, why are you going through an MD degree?
Of course, MBBs hire MDs. But the assumption is that they only realized later that they wanted this career. If you realize that now… decide accordingly!

Hi,
Yes, big consulting firms do hire medical doctors. While the majority of consultants in these firms come from business backgrounds, there is a growing recognition of the value that individuals with medical training can bring to the consulting field.
Medical doctors often possess strong analytical skills, problem-solving abilities, and deep domain knowledge in healthcare, which can be highly valuable in healthcare consulting practices. MBB firms have specialized teams or practices dedicated to healthcare consulting, and they actively seek candidates with medical expertise to work on projects in this sector.
When applying as a medical doctor to these consulting firms, it's important to highlight the transferable skills and experiences you have gained throughout your medical education and practice. Showcase your ability to analyze complex situations, make data-driven decisions, and work effectively in multidisciplinary teams. Emphasize any leadership roles, research experience, or involvement in healthcare management projects that you have been a part of during your medical career.
It can also be beneficial to network with individuals who have successfully transitioned from a medical background to consulting roles in these firms. Seek out informational interviews, attend networking events, or join professional associations where you can connect with consultants who have similar backgrounds.

Hi there,
yes, there is a realistic chance, as all MBBs like to hire a great diversity of profiles and this definitely includes candidates with med school backgrounds.
Regards, Andi

Absolutely! MBB hire from all backgrounds. MDs are highly valued by them in healthcare/pharma practices especially. Definitely look into recruiting for MDs if you are interested!
