Hi everyone,

I'm in a bit of a dilemma and could use some advice. I have already secured a job offer with Alixpartners in Milan, but I am also being considered for positions at Kearney and Oliver Wyman in Dubai. I am also interested in applying to Bain and McK, but I am not sure if I should be applying to their Milan or Dubai offices. To complicate matters further, my girlfriend is currently living in Milan.

I know that ultimately this is a personal decision and it depends on my own values and priorities, but I would really appreciate some advice from those who have faced similar choices. Should I stick with the offer from Alixpartners, pursue the opportunities in Dubai, or try for Bain and McK in either Milan or Dubai? Any insights or personal experiences you can share would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi there,

First of all, it is great that you have multiple job opportunities to consider!

I think this is an interesting question that may be relevant for many people. I would be happy to share my thoughts on it:

  • It sounds like you have a tough decision to make regarding job opportunities in Milan and Dubai. One of the most important factors to consider is the location and how it aligns with your preferences and lifestyle. Living in Milan versus Dubai will be a very different experience, with different cultures, languages, and climates to consider. It might be helpful to do some research on each city to get a better understanding of what it would be like to live and work there.
  • As you mentioned, all of the companies you are considering are strategy consulting firms, but it's still important to do your due diligence and research each company to understand their industry focus, clients, project types and work cultures. Please note that AlixPartners is not a regular strategy consulting firm and it may be worth doing extra research on them to make sure the work aligns with your interests and career goals.
  • Ultimately, the decision will come down to what is most important to you and what will make you happiest in the long term. It might be helpful to make a list of pros and cons for each location to help you weigh the decision.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to address your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hello!

I don't think you are in the point of making this call, since you don't know what you are comparing your MIlano offer with.

My advice: do the itnerviews that you have lined up, and also keep pushing for the Bain interview. In the case of getting them, see the conditions, and then make a call.

ATM you cannot really decide, since you don't know what you would be deciding between.

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

Hello,

This is a good problem to have! Here are my thoughts:

1) As you rightly said, this highly depends on your short term and long term goals, but let me jot down a few things to think about.

2) When does your AlixPartners offer expire? If it expires soon (<1 month), you may not have enough time to start a new application process without losing out on this one.

3) That brings me to my next question, are you okay with potentially letting go of the AlixPartners offer to chase McKinsey? If you're comfortable with that then go for it!

4) Since you're already in the process of Kearney and OW in Dubai - it's definitely worth to complete those processes and see if you get an offer. Then you can decide between the 2 or 3 offers you have weighing different factors like salary/quality of life/long term goals/proximity to girlfriend/brand value etc

5) Try networking with a few consultants from these companies both in the Milan and Dubai offices to understand a bit more about the culture and identify what you like more

Hope this helps!

All the best :)

I think you should decide based on location first and then apply to the relevant Bain and McK office. You can always report multiple locations in your applications but it is worth you being clear on where you want to be based.

MBB is fairly similar across geographies and the only differences tend to be cultural (e.g. location specific).

Hi there,

First: You only have one offer…you are creating a false choice here…

Second: If you prefer the other firms/locations, then you should absolutely apply/interview…then, once you see the results you can decide where specifically to go (and you can negotiate)

Thirdly: Which company/region to work in is a deeply personal preference. You need to decide what you care about most (salary, prestige, company culture, country culture, taxes, work-life balance, projects, growth opportunities, etc.). Once you've decided your top 2-3 you can then figure out which best meets those needs

Kearney and OW are way inferior to AP.
At the same time, in Dubai, your net salary is 2.5x that in Milan.
AP has a strong and quite large office in Dubai, I would try to move internally in 2 years.
That said, AP's salary, type of projects, and learning opportunities are probably superior to that of any MBB, but from your message, it is clear you don't know it yet.
If you want to discuss it, feel free to reach out and I can share with you my perspective; I think it may be valuable given that I've been at AP (Milan), Bain (Milan) and now I am moving to BCG.
