Cross offers

Hello,

I'm an experienced hire interviewing for Mckinsey. The recruiter know that I have cross offers ( not MBB) and asked for the company names and location. I know an offer from Bain or BCG would put me in position to negotiate the location. Do Mckinsey ask to see these offers?

Hi there,

Having alternative offers indeed gives you some leverage in negotiations. If you feel comfortable with sharing this info with the McK interviewer, then go ahead. It can't really hurt. They won't ask to see any actual official offers, so you could also be bluffing and they wouldn't know. It's obviously not very moral and elegant to do so, however.

Best,

Cristian

For McKinsey, they are not intimidated by cross offers. I know for a fact their win rate for cross offers is very high.

This being said for cross offers they will 1) accelerate a process for you, where possible (ie to get you an answer); 2)  sell you very hard if you do get an offer with them (but tend not to move on salary)

And the degree to which they might ‘care’/respond is correlated to the firm you have a cross offer with. Of course don't lie and don't expect huge amounts but for sure alert them to any cross offer situations you might have (especially with exploding offers)

Hi there,

Q: Does McKinsey ask to see offers?

I never heard of a case where they asked to see the actual offer. They usually ask for the company names to see if there is a risk to lose a candidate / understand if it is direct competition.

So far that it is Tier 2, you should be able to leverage them to accelerate the process. If it is MBB, you could also be able to negotiate salary conditions/seniority.

Good luck!

Hello,

You can mention your other offers during the negotiation process, and that can put you at an advantage in negotiating salary and location. However, McKinsey will not ask to see them, and you don't have to disclose them if you don't want to (although there isn't much of a downside, in my opinion).

No, they won't ask. But lying is not a good policy.
Also be aware that it only goes so far regarding negotiation.

In general, they want you to chose Mckinsey because you actually prefer Mckinsey.
