Can I apply for two open positions at Bain (London)?

I've already applied for the Consultant position at Bain London office, since it stated that they encourage JDs, MDs, PhDs to apply (one of which I have) and the Associate Consultant position looked to be a post-university one (I have 3 years of industry experience).

My question is:

a) have I shot myself in the foot by applying for a higher position? Looking at linkedin people with similar experience to me, they entered at associate consultant level

b) Can I also apply to the assoc. consultant position or is it too late?

Hi there,

a) have I shot myself in the foot by applying for a higher position? Looking at linkedin people with similar experience to me, they entered at associate consultant level

If you have or are pursuing an advanced degree (Master's/PhD) then you did indeed apply to right position.

Importantly, if you are currently studying, make sure you recruit/apply via your university's process.

b) Can I also apply to the assoc. consultant position or is it too late?

It depends on when you applied. If you just sent the consultant one, you can ask them to pull it so you can re-apply. That said, I'm not sure you applied to the wrong one.

Importantly, network BEFORE applying. Not only does this help you in situations like this (someone to reach out to), but it helps you figure out the right role AND drastically increases your chances of being invited to interview.

Hi there,

I understand your concerns and wanting to find the best fit for your qualifications and experience at Bain. Navigating job applications can indeed be tricky, especially when multiple positions seem appealing. To your questions

Q: Have I shot myself in the foot by applying for a higher position?
While it's natural to second-guess your choices, remember that firms value confidence and ambition. Your application for the Consultant position with a higher degree and industry experience is justified. The decision to place you will ultimately be based on a combination of your qualifications, the interview process, and the company's needs. Also, many consulting firms have a holistic approach to hiring, which means that even if they find you a better fit for another role, they might consider you for it.

Q: Can I also apply to the assoc. consultant position or is it too late?
Applying for multiple positions can be seen from different angles. On one hand, it shows enthusiasm and keen interest in the company. On the other, it might give an impression of uncertainty about what you truly want. Since you've already applied for the Consultant role, it might be worth waiting to hear back or proactively contact the HR team.

Best of luck with your application!

Best,

Alberto

a) Applying for a higher position should not necessarily disadvantage you. Bain typically welcomes candidates with diverse backgrounds and qualifications, including JDs, MDs, and PhDs. They assess applicants based on their skills, experience, and fit for the role. Your industry experience could be an asset in the Consultant role. Focus on highlighting your relevant experience and skills during the interview process to demonstrate your suitability for the position.

b) It's usually acceptable to apply for multiple positions if you feel you are a strong fit for them. However, you should check Bain's specific application guidelines and policies to ensure you are not in violation of any rules. If there is no explicit restriction against applying for both positions, you can certainly consider applying for the Associate Consultant position as well if you believe it aligns with your career goals.

In either case, be sure to tailor your application and interview discussions to match the requirements and expectations of the role you're interested in. Good luck with your applications and interviews!

Hi there!

I'd reach out to the recruiter if I were you and discuss the situation. That's what they're there for.

You need to understand from them what role fits you best considering your current level of experience. This shouldn't be guesswork.

Aside from this, no, you can't apply to multiple positions in parallel. Just one. So you'd have to withdraw the previous application.

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your questions:

  • First of all, there's essentially no downside risk for you in this case. If the recruiter thinks the Consultant position might be above your qualifications, they would typically re-allocate you to the Associate Consultant position.
  • Moreover, I would advise you to not apply for two different positions at the same time. It will only create confusion on the recruiter’s end and offers no advantages for your application.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming Bain interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

1) Have I shot myself in the foot by applying for a higher position?

If you have the qualifications listed for the higher position, there is no harm in applying for that position. Most likely if they think that you fit a lower position, they will inform you and consider you for that specific position.

2) Can I also apply to the assoc. consultant position or is it too late?

You cannot be considered for two positions at the same time, so if you want to apply for a different role you would have to withdraw the application. If you met the qualifications for the Consultant role though, I would keep the application as it is. If you really have strong doubts, you can reach out to HR to clarify how to proceed.

Good luck!

Francesco

No, you can't at Bain.

I though I could apply for two levels, but once I had submitted the first application and went for the second I received this:

Sorry! You already have an application in process therefore aren't able to reapply at this point.
