Dear members, I’ve been invited to apply to a consulting job at McKinsey via their online portal. Is it okay to apply to the business analyst, junior associate, and associate positions at the same time considering that the online application panel allows for up to five applications to be open at the same time?
P.S: By the time I join the firm in case I was approved, I will be an MBA degree holder.

Hello!

That wouldn´t make sense. If you will have an MBA by then, the only position that makes sense in McK is Associate, and that is the one that you should apply to.

Adding on top of that a BA application, for instance, wouldn´t add any value, if so would add confusion.

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

Hi there,

Don't do it, this only creates confusion!

Depending on pre-MBA experience and MBA itself, as well as local office policy, you will either enter as Junior Associate or Associate. If your MBA permits, you could also consider an intern position. We can rule out BA for now.

My advice is the following:

  • If part of your MBA, apply for the intern position – reason being that you can go through the full interview process and afford to fail because you won’t be blocked for interviewing for a FT Associate position.
  • Alternatively, apply for the Associate position, which is generally most suitable for MBAs – if McKinsey likes you but think you’re a bit too inexperienced, they will automatically convert your application to Junior Associate.

Hope this helps a bit. Best of luck!

Hi there,

Q: Is it okay to apply to the business analyst, junior associate, and associate positions at the same time?

Not sure why you should apply for multiple positions for the same vertical (I expect it's for generalist).

If you are going to join post MBA, you should apply for an Associate position. Doing multiple applications for different levels of seniority would just risk to confuse the recruiters/system.

Hope this helps,

Francesco

Hi there,

You “can”, but I would not recommend it.

You need to speak with the recruiter/HR to see where they think you would fit best. This has the dual benefit of making them more aware of your name as well. At most I would apply to 2.

Hhm that's a good question. Honestly I don't think that makes a lot of sense.

They're not going to invite you for several interviewing days separately, but if they do, it would only be once.

I know that the “normal” (whatever that means) position as an MBA graduate would be as an associate, but there are definitely exceptions:

  • I have seen MBAs (and PhD holders) be offered Fellow positions (in German office, this is for Business analysts which have a Masters degree)
  • I had colleagues who worked for almost a decade at a different consultancy and even then only joined as a Fellow

I would do two things:

  • Try to reach out (ideally by phone) to an McK recruiter in your local office and ask them exactly this. They can probably help you figure out which position is the right one for you. Then apply for that one.
  • If you can't reach anyone then I would suggest to apply for the Associate position. It's the appropriate one given your background. And they can/might still offer you a different position at the end of the application process!

No, I would not recommend you do that.

The criteria for each role is very clear and so is the level of experience or degree type required. I would highly suggest you pick the option that is the closest match based on those. Otherwise it becomes quite clear you are trying to ‘game’ the system or are not good at following clear instructions.

Best,

Udayan
