How to Use AI to Enhance Your Case Interview Preparation

AI tools like ChatGPT can significantly enhance your case interview preparation, if used thoughtfully. They won’t replace real-time practice or human coaching, but they offer a powerful way to get inspiration and different perspective, reinforce concepts, and fill gaps in your understanding.

For consulting candidates, the rise of tools like ChatGPT has opened up a new realm of possibilities. Whether you’re prepping for McKinsey, BCG, Bain, or any other top-tier firm, you now have access to an intelligent assistant that can supplement your prep in ways that were unthinkable even a few years ago.

How AI Can Enhance Your Consulting Interview Prep

Let’s walk through how you can use AI, especially tools like ChatGPT, across the different components of your case interview preparation, while also keeping in mind its limitations.

Frameworking

  • Generate sample frameworks for common case types

Example: “Give me a MECE framework to analyze declining profitability at a hotel chain.”

  • Suggest alternative ways to structure a problem

Example: “What are three other ways I could structure a market entry case for a B2B software firm?”

  • Provide feedback on your frameworks

Example: Paste your initial structure and ask, “Is this framework logically complete? What am I missing?”

Math Practice

  • Create mental math practice questions

Example: “Give me 10 math drills not more complicated 2 digit by 1 digit than testing specifically percentages and division”

  • Share tips for faster calculations

Example: “What’s the quickest way to estimate 17% of 86,000 in my head?”

  • Explain math or business math concepts

Example: “Explain breakeven price with an example”

Brainstorming

  • Generate brainstorming prompts

Example: “Give me five brainstorming prompts that might be asked within a growth strategy case interview question in the edtech industry.”

  • Review and expand your brainstormed ideas

Example: Type out your ideas and prompt: “Here’s what I came up with—can you suggest what I might have missed?”

  • Reorganize ideas into logical buckets

Example: “Group these 10 ideas for reducing cost at an airline into MECE categories.”

Business Judgment

  • Generate industry overviews

Example: “Write a 200-word overview of the logistics industry and key value drivers in 2025.”

  • Provide primers on industry dynamics

Example: “How has the global apparel industry evolved post-COVID, and what are the key current challenges?”

  • Expand on lines of thinking from previous practice

Example: “In a case I did on private equity in F&B, we mentioned franchise models—what are their pros and cons?”

Fit & Behavioral Questions

  • Generate fit/behavioral question lists

Example: “Give me 15 behavioral interview questions that a consulting firm would typically ask”

  • Provide feedback on structure and tone

Example: Paste your draft story and prompt: “Is this STAR format clear and concise? How can I improve the flow?”

  • Edit or shorten your responses

Example: “Cut this 400-word leadership story down to under 250 words without losing impact.”

Live Case Practice with AI

This is the one area where I still don’t recommend relying on ChatGPT as a full substitute for human case partner. While it can simulate some case logic, it lacks the nuance, pressure, and dynamic questioning that makes live casing so powerful. AI can’t read your body language, tone, or hesitations and move the case along based on those. AI still can’t replicate a reasoning, experienced interviewer

Key Takeaways

Keep in mind these three principles when using AI in your interview prep:

1. AI is a tool, not a skill

Don’t outsource your thinking. Use AI to check your logic, but still try to solve the problem yourself.

2. AI is not always right

Be critical of suggestions. Not all logic, facts, or frameworks generated are accurate or applicable.

3. Quality human feedback still matters

Today, AI still cannot replicate the reasoning, nuanced logic and experience of an MBB interviewer and case coach. That is why interviews are still conducted by actual consultants.

I would encourage you to start thinking like a top-tier consultant today and use every tool available to get there. As this article shows, used strategically, AI can support nearly every part of your case prep.

But remember: the goal in the interview is to show that you can think. You, not AI. And in the interview, you won’t have access to AI. While helpful, it does not replace having strong fundamentals.
