Shall I withdraw my application for a role that I don't meet the criteria for?

Hello,

I've recently applied to a consulting firm for both their strategy and analytics entry-level roles.

I only came to realise that I have to do a coding test for the analytics roles which I don't have the technical knowledge for, the application is still at screening stage.

I wonder if I should withdraw my application or still go ahead with it, given that I'm most likely to fail.

I would like to know whether withdrawing the anlytics role could impact the application of the other one, as the application form in strategy role explicitly asked if i have applied the analytics role.

Thank you very much for your help!

Hi there,

Given the situation, it might be best to reach out to HR and explain the misunderstanding. Let them know that, while you’re genuinely interested in both roles, you didn’t realize the analytics position required a coding test, which isn’t within your current skill set.

This way, they can guide you on whether it’s better to withdraw from the analytics role or if they can keep your application focused on the strategy role without affecting your candidacy.

Taking this proactive step shows transparency and professionalism and allows HR to help you make the best decision moving forward. Best of luck!

Hi there,

you could wait and see if you even get invited to take the coding test for the analytics role or if the recruiters think your profile doesn't really match the requirements. If that is the case, then you just proceed with your other application.

In case you do get invited to take the coding test, you could reach out to the recruiters and let them know that after closer consideration, you think the strategy role is the one you really want to move forward with.

I would not take a test which you know you are going to fail at a company where you still want to recruit for another job. But at this point, I would be reactive about it and not proactive anymore.

Hi there,

I would definitely reach out to HR and tell them about the situation, highlighting that you are still interested in the strategy role.

There is no benefit of staying in the race for the analytics role and there is no downside in being transparent about it.

Cheers,

Florian
