Rescheduling interview and quick call chat?

I wanted to get your thoughts on something. The BCG HR reached out today to postpone my upcoming interview to next week, but before rescheduling, she'd like to have a quick 15-minute call with me first. I recently did interview 1 for round 1 and the next interview is interview 2. I'm not sure if this is a standard part of their process. Have you seen this before or have any idea what it might be about?

Hi,

Given that it’s just a 15-minute call and they are rescheduling your interview, it’s most likely to align on logistics, availability, or clarify something about the process or timeline. I wouldn’t be worried about anything related to performance or a real interview.

If you know who will be on the call from BCG, that can give you a signal: if it’s someone junior from the recruiting team, it’s almost certainly logistics. If it’s a more senior person, there’s a small chance it could be a quick sense check on motivation/fit,  but still unlikely to be anything formal.

Hope it helps. If you want to discuss further, feel free to DM me.

Hi there,

Anything we say here is conjecture.

That said... it's unlikely that the call is good news. They are either cancelling your interviews or postponing. Could be because of you (something you did), or it could be because of them (not hiring anymore).

Unless you did something egregious, it's the latter.

Nothing you can do about it until you take the call. So take it, be professional, hear what they have to say.

In the meantime: network with and apply to other firms. BCG is not your only shot. Never stop recruiting until you have a signed offer in hand.

10% off 1st session | Ex-McKinsey Consultant & Interviewer | PEI | MBB Prep | Ex-BCG

hey there :)

this is quite normal and usually nothing negative. in most cases it’s just HR aligning on logistics, checking your availability, or giving you a quick update on the process.

sometimes they also use it to get a quick impression check after interview 1 or to clarify things like role, location, or timeline. it’s typically not evaluative like an interview.

i’d just be friendly, clear on your motivation for Boston Consulting Group and ready to confirm availability. no need to overprepare.

if you want, happy to quickly prep you on what to say.

best,
Alessa :)

Yes, they sometimes split the round.

It doesn't have to mean anything.

I also expect the call to be mostly admin related. They almost never give feedback between interviews in the same round.

However, do see and ask if you could get some feedback from your first interview so you can be better prepared for the second.

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

This isn't standard procedure but I wouldn't say it's uncommon enough to be surprised. My guess is it's more for logistics than anything regarding your performance as you have not yet finished the round, and companies only decide after a full round. My suggestion is to not be too worked up over this.

This isn't a standard step between interview 1 and 2. Normally HR just reschedules and moves on.

Don't panic though. A 15-minute call usually means one of three things.

One, logistics. They may want to align on format, timing, or who you'll meet next.

Two, a check-in. HR sometimes calls to share light feedback, reconfirm your motivation, and keep you warm through the delay. Usually a good sign.

Three, a soft signal. Rarely, they call to share concerns from interview 1 and see how you respond.

How to prep: Treat it like a mini fit chat. Be ready to reflect on interview 1, what went well, what you'd do differently. Reconfirm why BCG and this office. Have 2-3 good questions ready. Be warm and natural, not scripted.

Don't ask if it's a good or bad sign. Just engage. If they share feedback, listen and take it on board.

One more thing. The fact that they're rescheduling, not dropping you, is a positive signal. If interview 1 had gone badly, the easiest move would be to close the process.
