Not hearing back after Bain Second Round

Hi everyone,

I am currently applying for the Associate Consultant Intern position at the Bain Hong Kong office. I had my second‑round interview on 9 February, and it has now been six weeks without any update from Bain.

Some additional background: although I applied for the Hong Kong office, all of my interviewers (both first and second round) were from the Shanghai office. After my first round, I sent a follow‑up email after a week but received no reply. A week later, I was invited to the second round. I sent a thank‑you note after the second round and another follow‑up email three weeks ago.

I understand this period may be particularly busy, especially since my interview took place right before the Chinese New Year. I am also unsure whether the cross‑office interview setup is contributing to the delay. At this point, I am not certain whether Bain will still send an update (even if it is a rejection), or if I should treat this as a silent rejection.

I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has had a similar experience with Bain or the Greater China office. Thank you very much, and good luck with whatever you are working on.

Six weeks is a long time, and I get why you're unsettled.

Bain does send rejections after second rounds - you rarely get fully ghosted at that stage. The more concerning signal is that your follow-up emails went unanswered, not the silence itself.

At this point I'd send one last short email to the recruiter. Keep it simple - reference your second round date, mention you're managing other timelines, and ask for any update they can share. No more than 3 sentences. Professional, not desperate.

If that gets no reply either, it's reasonable to start redirecting your energy. You've done everything right on your end.

I'm sorry to hear about the wait... not fun!

Six weeks is long, I'll be honest. And the cross office setup (applying to HK but interviewing with the Shanghai team) can absolutely slow things down. But until you hear back officially, you are neither accepted nor rejected. I have seen these things take up to and even beyond a month.

Sit tight. One more polite reach out is fine at this stage... but please don't spam them.

Now, here's what preparing for the worst actually means: apply to and network with dozens of firms right now. You don't go on one date to find a life partner... and you shouldn't put all your hopes and dreams on one firm that's currently not responding. Keep applying. Keep networking. That's what you can control.

Hope for the best, plan for the worst.

6 weeks is long, but not unusual for Bain in that region, especially with Chinese New Year and cross-office coordination between Hong Kong and Shanghai. this is very likely a delay, not necessarily a rejection.

you’ve already followed up appropriately, so I’d send one final short, polite check-in now and then leave it. something like reaffirming your interest and asking if there’s any update on timing.

important: don’t assume it’s over until you get a formal rejection. Bain usually does get back, even if late.

in parallel, keep moving with other applications so you stay in control of your timeline.
