McKinsey Interview – Switched to Fulltime, Regret It Now – Any Chance to Go Back to Intern?

Hey everyone,

I applied for the Fellow Intern role at McKinsey and made it to final interviews. Two days before the selection day, my recruiter called and said there were no internship spots left for my preferred timeline – but offered me to switch to the fulltime track instead. After some back and forth, I agreed (just one day before the interviews), even though I didn’t get a separate fulltime briefing.

The morning interviews (2 rounds) went really well – great feedback, especially on quantitative skills. I was told to keep going just like that.

But the final round with a senior partner went poorly. He shortened the case, felt like it to be more candidate-led and I lost my structure completely at the first question. I ended up tanking the case.

An hour after the last round (while still waiting at the office), I got the rejection – mainly due to structuring in the partner interview.

Now I really regret switching to fulltime. I’m pretty sure the intern track would’ve worked out based on the morning rounds. I sent a follow-up email to my recruiter asking if there’s any chance to still be considered for an internship, but haven’t heard back yet.

Has anyone experienced something similar?
Is there any realistic chance of being reconsidered for the internship, or does the failed partner round usually rule that out? Any thoughts or advice would be super appreciated!

Sorry to hear that.

Honestly, I've never seen this situation before. It seems unlikely that they'll let you go back to the intern role, since you already agreed before your interview.

Hopefully I am wrong on this...

Hi,

Sorry to hear it didn't work out in the last round.

Unfortunately it is not very likely they can reconsider you for the internship role - that would only happen if they face a severe shortage of talent, which doesn't seem to be the case currently - the recruiting team has no strong reason to go against a senior partner's judgement.

Given you did well in all the previous interviews before the final one, you must have been doing quite a lot of things right to get there. I would encourage you to explore opportunities with other consulting firms. You could still stand a good chance to break into consulting, with some more practices (especially train yourself to be more adaptive and calm, to cope with surprises that interviewers might throw you unexpectedly).

Best,

Emily

Hi there,

First of all, I am sorry to hear about the rejection from McKinsey!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • First of all, it is very unlikely that McKinsey will agree to give you an internship offer if you weren't successful in the application process, even though this last partner interview would not have been part of the internship application process.
  • Moreover, if you completely failed one of the very structured McKinsey interviews, it can very well be that you were lucky with the first two interviews.
  • Lastly, I would strongly advise you to explore other consulting firms in the meantime to eventually secure an offer.

You can find more on this topic here: How to deal with a rejection from a consulting company.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen
