MBB background check

Hi,
I recently signed an offer with an MBB firm. While reviewing my CV again, I realized that I made a small mistake in the start date of the part-time job I had during my university. I worked there for over three years, but my memory was a bit unclear, and I accidentally wrote a start date that is off by about two months.

I’ve heard that background checks are conducted, and I was wondering whether these are typically done for all graduate hires as well. Also, in a situation like this, could such a small discrepancy potentially cause serious issues, such as an offer being rescinded?

Of course, this was an honest mistake rather than an intentional misrepresentation, but I would really appreciate any insights from people who are familiar with the process.

Thank you very much.

Hi,

I wouldn’t worry about this. In most cases, background checks are either done before the offer is extended or only for specific situations that require a deeper verification. For standard graduate hires, they are usually quite light.

In your case the discrepancy is very minor and doesn’t change the substance of your experience (you still worked there for more than three years). Small date differences like a couple of months are quite common and typically not an issue at all.

Since it was an honest mistake and doesn’t materially affect your profile, I really wouldn’t be concerned about it.

Hi there

To be honest I wouldn't worry too much about this -  the background check is more of a criminal record check.
What you can do in the mean time, contact your recruitment team and explain the discrepancy. This ensures complete transparency - however, the small discrepancy is likely of no concern.

Congrats on your pending offer!

Yes, background checks are standard for MBB graduate hires. They verify employment dates, education, and sometimes references.

A two month discrepancy on a part-time university job is unlikely to cause serious problems. The three plus years of overall tenure is what matters. Background check providers see minor date errors all the time and usually just ask for clarification rather than flagging it as a red flag.

The best thing you can do is get ahead of it. Email your recruiter now, mention you noticed a small date error on a part-time role, and give them the correct information. Being upfront looks far better than having it surface during the check without explanation.

Do not overthink this. The risk is low and being proactive eliminates it almost entirely.
