Looking for typical equation question ( numeracy part) at mckinsey interview.

Dear Community,

I have an interview at Mckinsey coming soon and I am looking for any type of cases ( even only the numeracy question would be enough) that involves a kind of equation, or just the equation itself. I have realized this is a classic during this interview and the best to understand it is to practice.

Therefore I would be very happy if anyone would  be kind enough to redirect me to this kind of problem equation ( possibly 2 or 3 cases questions)

I have Already subscribed to Casecoach and bought Cheng & consentino but would really like to practice those kind of equation specifically ( usually it could be  something like  finding the volume of customer needed in order to reach a given payback period and taking into account an increase of the unit price, but could be anything else)

I can share  good materials as well if you are interested.

Thanks in advance !

Hi there,

You need to practice your ability and flexibility in answering any kind of equation/problem. Sounds like you've bought some good resources. Preplounge and Rocketblocks also have good exercises. If you'd like specific cases that are good, feel free to send me a message!

Ultimately, be prepared for:

  • Breakeven
  • ROI
  • Margin
  • Markup
  • Percent Change
  • NPV (perpetuity and annuity)
  • “Logic” equations

Good luck!

Hello!

It´s true that those types of cases are classics, but they are not the only ones! Be sure to also prep some of the other classics:

1. Profitability cases- basic profitability framework.

2. Idea generation cases: for any specif issue

3. Growth cases: market penetration, new product launch, product mix change, etc.

4. Pricing cases

5. M&A cases

6. Valuation cases

7. Value chain cases

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

Hi there, not sure about how effective your approach will be but I’ll try to help.

First of all, you won‘t find a single good McKinsey case floating around - they’re mostly terrible in all of the sources I’ve ever seen (which is almost all).

However, any case will do to practice “equations”. Hence, download any case book and jump to the quant part of any case. That should help you train that muscle.

Generally, math isn’t hard in McKinsey cases. It’s all about knowing when to do math (when you’re not being told explicitly) and building your own equations that are effective and simple. The actual number crunching is pretty straight forward if you set eve up right.

Let me know if you‘re interested in knowing more, I’ve seen and done this many times at McKinsey.

Best of luck!

Hey there,

Congrats on your interview!

First, check out the article I wrote here on the McKinsey interviews: https://www.preplounge.com/en/mckinsey-interview

It explains the quant part in some detail. Generally, McKinsey case math is never too hard but there are often shortcuts available or tricks you can do to be faster.

Second, shoot me a message and I am happy to share some REAL McKinsey cases.

All the best,

Florian

 Hi there,

Generally speaking, McK quant parts are not overly difficult - as long as you're solid on arithmetics and algebra, you should be fine.

That said, the Preplounge quant section as well as Rocketblocks should have plenty of suitable examples.

Beyond that, suggest you check out…

  1. MBA Case Books: they often have good quant-heavy sections and cases - feel free to PM me, if you don't have access to any
  2. GMAT prep materials: e.g. Manhattan GMAT Algebra guide - great to brush up on foundational algebra

Regards, Andi
