Multiple referrals

What’s the best way to handle situations where I network with multiple people (juniors to partners) within the same firm and more than one person offers to refer me?

  • Should I mention that someone else has already offered to refer me?
  • Or should I simply thank each person, then decide later whose referral to activate based on who I have the strongest rapport with?
  • If I choose the second approach, how should I update the others afterward?

Use one official referral, ideally from the person who knows you best and can genuinely speak for your fit. More referrals rarely add much, and duplicate referrals can create confusion

You do not need to tell every person immediately that others also offered. Thank them, continue building the relationship, then choose your strongest referrer before you apply.

For the others, send a short note after applying:
"Thank you again for offering to refer me. I really appreciated our conversation. I ended up applying through another referral, but I would be very grateful to stay in touch and learn from your experience at the firm"

If someone is much more senior and knows you well, use them. Otherwise, choose the person with the strongest rapport, not just the highest title

Hi,

You should use only one formal referral.

I would first choose who will refer you. When choosing, prioritize the person who (in order of importance):
1 --> is in the same office you are targeting;
2 --> appears genuinely willing to advocate for you / know you the best;
3 --> is more senior.

I would be transparent once someone specifically offers to refer you. Once you decide, update the others promptly. For example:

“Thank you again for offering to refer me. I really appreciate it. Another person I have been speaking with has now submitted the referral, so everything is already in the system. I wanted to let you know before you spent any time on it, and I really appreciate your support.”

Best,
Franco

Hi there,

You're overcomplicating this!

Use one formal referral. Since multiple people have offered, take the referral from the most senior person. A higher level internal endorsement generally carries more weight.

Tell the others promptly and honestly:

“Thank you again for offering to refer me. I really appreciate it. Another person I have been speaking with is submitting the referral, so I wanted to let you know before you spent any time on it. Thank you again for your support.”

If somebody has already submitted the referral before the more senior person offers, do not create a duplicate. Tell the senior person that you already have one in the system and ask whether they can flag your application to recruiting separately.

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your questions:

  • First of all, only one referral will count in the end anyway. From the two approaches you describe, I clearly prefer the second one: thank each person warmly, keep the conversations going, and decide later whose referral you activate. There is no need to tell everyone right away that others also offered to refer you.
  • Moreover, when you choose, I would advise you to pick the person who knows you and your work best, not automatically the most senior one. A referral where the person can say a few concrete things about you carries more weight than a title alone.
  • Lastly, for updating the others, a short and honest message works best. Tell them that a colleague who knew your profile well already submitted the referral, thank them again for their offer, and say you would like to stay in touch. Nobody reasonable will be upset about this, and these contacts can still support you later in the process.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare your application files, for your upcoming pre-interview assessments and/or interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hey there :)

You don’t need to activate multiple referrals. If several people offer, I’d choose the person who knows you and your profile best, ideally someone with whom you’ve built genuine rapport.

You can simply thank the others without making a big announcement. If they specifically ask whether you’ve already been referred, just be transparent and say that another person has offered to submit your referral.

I wouldn’t overthink it. Multiple people supporting your application is a good thing, but one strong referral is generally enough.

Best, Alessa :)
