How many consulting recruitment processes are manageable in parallel?

Hi everyone,

I’m an experienced hire in a technical role looking to transition into consulting. I’m currently targeting 6 firms, have networked with 4–6 people at each, and secured referrals at 5 firms. I’m now preparing my applications.

Networking and tailoring cover letters already take considerable time alongside my full-time job and interview preparation. While I hope to receive several interview invitations, I’m concerned about managing overlapping assessments and interviews.

I don’t have much control over timing, as it depends on role availability. Realistically, the most I can stagger applications is to submit to 1 or 2 firms per week over the next 4 weeks.

How many parallel processes have you found manageable? What practical tips would you suggest for balancing preparation and managing interviews across firms?

If you are already well prepared, then a large part of the work is already done. The core case and fit skills are transferable across firms, so adapting to each company’s specific interview format or areas of emphasis should usually be a smaller part of the preparation.

What I would be more careful with is how the interviews themselves end up clustering.

I would personally avoid interviewing with two different firms on the same day if possible. The nerves, energy and overall feeling from one interview can easily carry into the next one. Keeping them separate also gives you time to focus on the specific nuances of the firm you are interviewing with that day.
In your case, the main constraint may actually be your full-time job. Several interviews in the same week can become difficult to manage logistically, especially if you need to keep blocking working hours or repeatedly asking recruiters to reschedule.
I would not worry too much about submitting several applications within a relatively short period, though. Different firms move at very different speeds: one may respond immediately, another after several weeks, and another may take longer still. So applying at the same time does not necessarily mean interviewing at the same time.
If you want to be slightly cautious, you could leave a little space between applications, but I would not over-engineer it. You do not want to delay a strong opportunity just to create a perfect interview calendar that may never materialise anyway.

So I would focus less on the number of applications in parallel and more on avoiding too many actual interviews being compressed into the same few days, particularly given your full-time job.
