GMAT/Conceptual Questions in MBB Case Interviews?

Hello,

Will there be questions (especially in partner rounds) like them saying a bunch of algebra (e.g. unit A is 30% larger than the sum of units B and C) but more complex? Because I feel like prepping for this is way different than just doing normal case maths

Thanks

Hi there,

Hey, good question! It’s unlikely you’ll get GMAT-style algebra in MBB case interviews, even in partner rounds. However, you might encounter more abstract, conceptual math that tests your ability to think logically under pressure.

For example, a partner might phrase a problem in a more complex or indirect way, expecting you to quickly break it down and structure your approach without getting lost in the numbers. They’re often more interested in your reasoning and ability to connect insights than pure mathematical precision.

That said, it’s a good idea to practice translating these more complex verbal prompts into equations or clear structures, as it’ll boost your confidence and speed in interviews. Focus on building strong mental math and quick estimation skills, as well as comfort with proportions, percentages, and ratios.

Best of luck with your prep!

Best,

Evelina

Hi,

It is very rare cases when Partners would give you algebra questions. Most likely they would just give normal case maths, and Partner round math is usually simpler than the previous rounds.

Partners are super busy with a lot of stressful, high stake meetings with clients day in and day out. Interview is one of the limited opportunities during the day that they can actually relax a bit - they wouldn't want to make their life difficult either. They are also just human beings.

There might not be "algebra questions" per se, but some cases can have quite complex math that is similar to GMAT questions (not the majority of cases though). Hence I think it would still be beneficial to do some complex math questions from GMAT as it is helpful for complex math case questions.

hey!

I would say yes, especially in partner or final rounds, it's common to get more conceptual, GMAT-style math, not just basic case calculations. They might test your ability to quickly interpret layered quantitative relationships (like ratios, relative sizes, or combined percentages) in a business context. It's less about raw math and more about logical structuring under pressure. To prep, focus on mental math, algebraic thinking, and interpreting complex quantitative setups — GMAT problem-solving and data sufficiency can help.

Partners are more interested in judging your character and how good a consultant you can be.

That premise means that standalone algebra questions would be a rarity. But if your core math concepts are alright, then you shouldn't have issues in working on such questions - since you aren't going to be put on a 3-second clock to answer them.

However you will get your fair share of math in the course of the case any ways. Better to focus more on converting business concepts into their relevant math and algebra - instead of doing pure context-less algebra (unless your base algebra is under-developed)

That's highly unlikely.

Just to make this clear - they are not out there to hire math geniuses. Otherwise, they would be hiring math PhDs.

They want people who are a good balance between IQ and EQ.

And on the maths component, they tend to be more interested in your ability to turn a conceptual business problem into an equation and then to be able to work with a client through it.

Hi,

It may happen, but it’s not usual. Focus on being able to solve regular case math, interpreting charts, graphs and tables and being able to do your calculations accurately and efficiently. That’s a way better usage of your time.

Best,

Mari

Hey,

Likely no algebra. It’s more about conceptual business problems turned into calculations like breakeven, market share, cost savings etc

Best of luck
