Background check clarification

Got an offer from one of the MBBs. In b school I had a capstone consulting project with a tech firm where I worked with the stakeholder closely for 6 weeks on designing a gtm strategy. Listed this on my resume as gtm strategy intern at that firm. How do I clarify this in the background check?  Will this be an issue?

Hi there,

Background checks verify employment — they are not auditing every title on your resume. They’re checking: did you work at this company, around these dates, in roughly this capacity? That’s it.

The real risk in your situation isn’t the title itself. It’s whether the tech firm has any employment record of you. Capstone projects generally don’t create one. If a verification service reaches out to them and they come back blank — that’s what could flag.

Be ready to explain it clearly if asked. Something like: “I worked on a 6 week consulting engagement for this firm through my b-school capstone, worked closely with their stakeholder on a GTM strategy, and listed it as an intern role because of the hands on nature of the work.” Simple. True. Don’t volunteer it if no one asks.

And honestly — you knew “gtm strategy intern” was a stretch. Don’t do it again. Project work is project work. An internship is an internship. Both are legitimate — list them as what they are.

You should be fine. Just be ready with the honest explanation if it comes up.

Hi there,
Typically this shouldn't really be an issue - but in the future you should clarify further on this type of experience (e.g., list under education as capstone etc.).

For right now, I wouldn't really worry about it - if it comes up explain your rationale for listing as you did, however in the future I'd be clearer.

Congrats on your pending offer!

hey there :)

This usually isn’t a problem. In the background check you can simply clarify that it was a school capstone consulting project done with the company rather than a formal internship. What matters most is that the work itself was real and the description isn’t misleading. If the company can confirm you worked with them during that project period, it should be fine. If you want to be extra safe, just explain it proactively if asked.

best,
Alessa :)

This could be an issue, not because of the work itself, but because of how it was labeled. Calling it an internship when it was an academic capstone project is a meaningful difference. Background check teams verify titles and employment status, and if the firm has no record of you as an intern, that creates a flag.

The good news is you can get ahead of this easily. In the background check clarification, be straightforward. Explain that this was a six week capstone consulting project completed as part of your MBA program, that you worked directly with a stakeholder at the firm on a GTM strategy, and that the title on your resume did not accurately reflect the nature of the engagement.

Do not overthink the explanation. The work sounds legitimate and valuable. The issue is purely the label.

Reach out to your contact at that firm now and give them a heads up that they may receive a verification request. Make sure they know how to describe the engagement accurately when asked.

Going forward, list it as "MBA Capstone Consulting Project" with the firm name. That is honest, still impressive, and will not create problems.

Totally understand why you'd be concerned about this, especially with an offer in hand – it’s a high-stakes situation, and you want to avoid any missteps.

Here's the reality: MBB firms take integrity very seriously. The background check isn't just about verifying dates; it's also about confirming the nature of your experience. Listing a capstone project as an "internship" is an embellishment that, while common, can flag an inconsistency. The main risk isn't necessarily that the firm will revoke the offer for this specific item alone, but that they'll perceive a lack of honesty or judgment if it's discovered without you proactively addressing it.

Your best move here is to be fully transparent before the background check company flags it. When the background check process begins, reach out to your recruiter or the HR point of contact and clarify the experience. Explain that it was a capstone consulting project that deeply engaged you with the firm on a GTM strategy, and you've reflected on whether "intern" was the most accurate title. Frame it as clarifying a potential ambiguity rather than confessing a deliberate misrepresentation. Offer to provide documentation like your b-school syllabus, project brief, or client contact details if they need to verify the work.

Hope it helps to clarify!
