Americans working at MBB/Tier 2 in the ME, do you get the same non-cash benefits as in the US?

Hi All,

For US citizens and permanent residents working in the Middle East for one of the MBBs/ T2 or even Big 4.

1-Do you get the same benefits as the US ( maternity/paternity leave, 401K, health insurance)?

2- How do the taxes work? I understand that I still have to pay taxes and can use the FEIE, but what about social security and FICA? also, can you get the whole housing allowance excluded, or only if you actually spend it on housing?

hi!

Great questions! Here's a quick overview:

  1. Non-cash benefits in the Middle East (ME) usually follow local office policies, not US ones. That means:
    • Maternity/paternity leave: Varies by country and firm, usually less generous than the US (especially vs. top-tier US benefits).
    • 401K: No, you typically won’t get a 401K abroad.
    • Health insurance: Yes, but it's through local providers—often very solid in the ME region.
    • US-specific perks (like gym reimbursements, fertility benefits, etc.) may not apply.
  2. Taxes: As a US citizen:
    • You must still file US taxes every year.
    • You can use FEIE (~$126k exemption in 2025) and Foreign Housing Exclusion, but only the amount actually spent on housing is excluded.
    • You still owe Social Security and Medicare (FICA) if you're paid by a US entity, but not if you're hired by a local ME office (e.g., via BCG Dubai payroll).

Let me know if you want help optimizing your setup or choosing an office!

Best,
Alessa :)

Hello there,

I would suggest you to reach out to a North American consultant working in ME through LinkedIn to have those questions answered faster. Ask for a coffee chat and casually mention them.

Best,

Mari

Hi there,

The benefits are office dependent, so even if you are American and work in a ME office, you will receive ME office benefits (financial and non-financial).

In terms of taxation, it's best if you check with a tax advisor from the US. I believe the US has a special status in this sense. The earlier you figure out the better and the more peace of mind you'll have.

Best,
Cristian

Normally benefits are assigned on a regional level. I would suggest speaking to a tax advisor as well, since these things are often a bit hard to navigate on your own.

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your questions:

  • First of all, you could, of course, not receive US non-cash benefits because you would not be employed in the US but in a Middle Eastern country. However, consulting firms typically align their compensation and perks packages globally.
  • Moreover, regarding your question about the housing allowance, I would strongly advise you to reach out to a tax advisor to determine whether you would even continue to be taxable in the US.

You can find more on this topic here: Salaries in the consulting industry.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen
