Should I take the McKinsey interview after signing with another MBB

I recently signed an offer with an MBB firm in ME, and just received 1st round interview invite from McKinsey. The roles seem to be at a similar level.

I'm reaching out to ask for your thoughts on whether it’s worth trying this opportunity, especially considering the following concerns:

1. Compensation: Does McKinsey typically offer noticeably better total compensation (base + bonus) compared to other MBBs in ME?

2. Interview Format & Prep: I haven’t practiced cases for a while since getting the offer, and my current job is quite demanding. Given McKinsey’s interviewer-led format, is it still realistic to pass with light preparation if I had been in good case shape before?

3. Firm Culture & Growth in the Region: Which firm is generally perceived to offer better long-term development, project exposure, or exit opportunities in ME? I’m curious about differences in culture, training, and focus across offices like Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh.

To be honest, I do have a genuine interest in understanding the working styles and cultures across firms. But I’m also trying to balance this with limited bandwidth. Open to hear your thoughts and suggestions!

Thank you in advance!

It’s up to you.

Comp will be broadly similar, especially at entry level. McK comp accelerates at Partner level which is far down the line.

Interviewer-led format doesn’t change much regarding your fundamental casing skills - if you can pass a final round at BB, you can likely pass a final round at McK.

McK globally is the biggest brand name, but there’s not that much difference vs. Bain or BCG, same goes for training, exits etc.

It’s not like IB, where reneging on an offer and accepting another one might land you in hot water (I.e., BB are not likely to call up McK and complain if you switch now after signing, which does happen in banking sometimes).

The fundamental question you have to answer is why McK over the others. If you have a good reason - e.g., you really care about working in a sector where McK is materially stronger than the others - then fine. If not, it seems like a lot of effort for no materially different outcome.

That’s just my take, others might disagree.

Hello there,

Although McKinsey is the largest firm among MBBs, have the largest alumni pool and its most well known, for the points you mentioned, there is not much difference from it to BB.

I agree with almost everything Mihir mentioned above but “BB are not likely to call up McK and complain if you switch now after signing” - you may harm your reputation depending on your seniority level and how many people were engaged in the process/after it, so if you decide to proceed, do it carefully.

Best,

Mari

Hi there,

Congrats on the offer and on being invited by McKinsey as well to begin the interviewing process!

Let me take them one by one.

1. Compensation. From what I hear, McK actually has a slightly lower compensation in ME than some of its peers, likely explained by having a stronger brand.

2. Format. If you're approaching cases in the right way, then the McK interview should feel like no difference. If you have any doubts, you might want to consider getting a baselining assessment with an expert. They could correct any techniques that would be inappropriate.

3. Culture. Honestly, there are bigger differences in culture from office to office within the same firm, than between the firms in the same location. So this one is very subjective and honestly there's nothing substantial that I could tell you here.

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

Comp wise, MCK actually tends to pay the lowest amongst MBB, while Bain pays the highest.

Interview wise, the fundamental preparation would be very similar. Only that you need to be mentally prepared that in an interviewer-led interview, you might be cut off, or you might suddenly be steered to a different track of the case. Don't panic when that happens.

On other points, there is a perception that MCK tends to be more competitive, while BCG and Bain are less so (and more "collaborative"). However, that's a bit generalization. How your experience will be depends largely on which individuals you come across in your case work. Training / growth wise, quite similar.

Best,

Emily
