Case Prompt

The CIO of a large insurance company asks BCG Platinion for support in renewing the IT landscape as a starting point for a digital transformation. He explains to us that the company's IT landscape is very fragmented (i.e., many different applications exist), while at the same time the various applications are highly integrated (i.e., there are many dependencies and interfaces between the applications). Many of the IT applications are outdated, monolithic in-house developments (mainframe-based) and are hosted by the insurance itself ("on premise").

The biggest pain points arising from this are:

  1. Problems with the stability of the individual applications
  2. Limited scalability of the applications
  3. Due to limitations of the current architecture, the implementation time of new functionalities ("time to market") is too long

The CIO now asks you to quickly assess the status quo, to identify main areas for action and to develop potential measures to renew the IT landscape.

  1. What is a possible approach for a quick assessment of the IT application landscape? How can we prioritize needs for action?
  2. What are the main technological levers that can be used to address the pain points raised by the CIO?
  3. What are key analysis dimensions for identifying the applications to which the technical levers can be applied?
