Hi everyone,

I’m an international student studying at a Canadian university. I applied to McKinsey 5 weeks ago; the offices I selected where that of my home country (preferred office) and two within Canada. Since I haven’t heard from them in a while, I’m planning to contact their HR team; however, I’m unsure as to which office I should reach out to. As far as I know, during the screening phase, a team of consultants from your university review and score your resume, which doesn’t depend on what offices you applied to.

Should I contact the office from my home country or one of the Canadian offices?

Also, I recently found out that there is program from another country (one that I did not apply to) within my region that pairs students with a consultant and give them taste of what consulting is about for a few weeks, with the option of being potentially invited to the recruitment process later on.

Would my application for the full-time role affect in any way my application to this program? In case I didn’t get pass the screening phase, would the recruiters for this program be notified of this?

Thanks.

Hi there,

I agree with Robert and would follow-up with your first choice.

In terms of the program: I don’t think there are constraints due to your previous application, but you can always reach out to the relevant HR to get confirmation it is indeed fine to apply.

Hope this helps,

Francesco

McKinsey offers w/o final round interviews - 100% risk-free - 10+ years MBB coaching experience - Multiple book author

Hi Anonymous,

In the first step I'd try to call (not email!) your preferred office - since it's a global recruiting system they should be able to review your application status independent of your current location.

Usually McKinsey does not invite candidates to additional events if they are already in the recruiting process. If you already decided to apply, there is (usually) no need to spend additional time and money on candidates telling them something about McKinsey or consulting, since based upon their application they should already know what they want. However, doesn't hurt to ask your HR contact about that, exceptions to the rule always exist.

Hope this helps - if so, please be so kind to give it a thumbs-up with the green upvote button below!

Hi there,

I agree and think you should reach out to your first choice. If they either don't answer or say "no", then reach out to the second one.

Good luck!

Hi there,

Two recommendations here:

  1. Call HR in your preferred office to ask about the status of your application. If you did not make it through, feel free to contact the other offices (in your order of preference)
  2. Do not submit another application for the program you mentioned. Try to network with HR from that office and ask about the best way to proceed forward: submitting a new application Vs considering the one you already submitted for that position as well

I hope this helps, do not hesitate to reach out to me should you want to discuss this further!

All the best,

Mehdi

From the question, it is very clear that you are going through a campus interview, a kind of recruitment channel. This recruitment channel, at least at the front-end is lead by the local offices. If your MBA school or your graduation school is in a particular city, then this particular city office is the one that leads it. So, if you haven't heard back from the company then your first point of contact should be the local office or the office of the country where your university or your application has gone into.

The program that you are referring to - not sure exactly, what's the intention of that program. A lot of companies keep on introducing these kinds of programs with different intentions. It's very important again that you've clarified this question with the local representative office and with that consulting company and clarify your doubt, whether there is any kind of advantages or disadvantages of being engaged in the parallel process if the different program. There are the best people to know about.

All the best.

Hi Gaurav, Yeah, I applied through campus recruitment (business analyst – McKinsey). To be honest that was what I thought since I’ve been told that a group of consultants from my university (no matter which McKinsey office they work at) review my application. But based on the answers, I am more confused than I was before. As far as the program, it is stated that the intention is to ‘train’ recipients in strategy consulting for a couple of weeks. These selected students will be directly invited to the recruitment process. I guess that’s why, though just a program, it asks for the same documentation as if you were applying to a full-time role. Thanks.
