One month gap in resume - how to communicate with HR?

Hi experts, previously in a post, I mentioned that I applied to a few firms when I was still working at my previous firm.

I had my first interview with this firm when I was still working, hence I didn't mention that I “will” leave soon. After I left the firm at the end of July, a few interviews still went on. I followed the experts' advice - avoid the truth but don't lie.

I was never asked the question (e.g. why did you leave the firm), but interviewers did mention things such as “Why do you want to switch firms after such a short time, instead of staying longer”, or “How long is your notice period”?

When responding to these questions, I've always focused on the “motivation” side of joining and did not say a word that I have left. But now that I'm close to getting an offer, I'm wondering what should I do next step (during the offer call):

1. Tell HR proactively that I have actually left the firm 1 month ago due to family issues (I'm applying to a new region hence need time to relocate, fix family matters, apply visa, etc). Probably I could also mention that I can provide a partner referral from my previous firm if HR has doubts?

2. Mention nothing and just provide the employment proof. Not sure whether this “1 month” gap is a big deal? In this scenario, probably HR might notice that I have already left the firm before securing this offer, and will reach out to me and ask the reason.

Would really appreciate your advice. Thank you so much!

Hi there,

Sounds like you have navigated those calls well - nice work.

I do not think you should pro-actively mention anything. If they bring it up, sure, flag the family issues (perfectly reasonable). If they don't, leave it! They can see your employment history. If they're sending you an offer, don't worry, they want you :)

Hi,

1 month is no big deal at all. Don't fret about it. This is really not something recruiting/interviewers will care about.

All the best!

Hello,

I don't think a 1 month gap is a big deal at all, that's a pretty small break. People sometimes have to quit before signing a new contract for all sorts of reasons. I think you're ok to do option #2, and explain your situation if HR actually asks about it during the call.

Hey there,

Not worth stressing about. If the gap was 6-12 months, they might follow up. Anything below that is really quite irrelevant.

My advice would be to say nothing unless asked. And here you seem to have a legitimate reason related to family. It's always good to demonstrate that you want to have your personal things in order, which is generally a source of strength at work (conversely, it's a distraction…).

Best of luck and let me know if I can help in any way.

Hi there!

Great job in getting this far into the process.

Don't overthink it at this point. If they ask, be honest and transparent. If not, don't attract attention to this.

You're not proactively hiding anything, so there's no need to act like you are.

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

Congratulations on getting to the offer call! In terms of your question:

Q: Now that I'm close to getting an offer, I'm wondering what should I do next step (during the offer call).

I don’t see why you should bring up the point if they don't ask given you did not lie. I would simply provide what requested during the background check.

Best,

Francesco

Hi there,

In general, a 1 month gap is not a big deal at all, especially not in consulting.

Would not bring it up pro-actively but only answer reactively. In the event that they do ask, state personal / family-related reasons. Should usually be enough.

Hope this helps.

Regards, Andi
