MBBs and social media

I'm in the process of interviewing with several MBBs, top consulting companies and Big 4s. My question refers to their policy and general perception on their associates having a public social media account. 

I'm applying for mid level positions, as an FYI.

I have a side hussle and I blog about fashion/lifestyle/travel. I see it as a business.

I know I may have to disclose it to continue if I'm getting paid, but in your expert opinion, how do consulting companies see this kind of thing? I'd very much like to continue if/when I have free time.

Hello!

I think, for now, you just need to worry about the interview and how this will be seen in it, not too much later on. 

And for the interview, I think this is actually fantastic! You can sell it very very well even as a business idea that you run by the side, so I would make sure that this appears in my stories.

Hi there,

Honestly, I think it's great! I don't view it as a negative at all.

I also don't think you'll have to stop doing it (as long as you don't use MBBs name anywhere on your account).

When/if you join you'll want to doube-check with HR, but, for the purposes of your recruiting/interviewing, this isn't a bad thing at all!

I don’t see a conflict in terms of activity. As long as you portray yourself in a professional manner it should not be an issue.

The exception is if actually promote certain companies and there is a conflict to the specific projects you are assigned into. And for Big4 restrictions might be more stringent as you may not publicly promote companies that they currently audit…

I have not heard of anyone being marked-down for having such a social media presence. If at all - it counts as entrepreneurship which is a much appreciated quality with consulting firms.

Regarding the commercial aspect of it - broadly the firms should not have a problem unless there is a conflict of interest.

Further, there might be an issue if the company has an exclusivity policy in their contract.

Both these aspects can only be resolved once you have the discussion with the company and once they give you the offer. At this stage it is too early to speculate with precision except for the fact that your social media activity seems legit and lit.

For the interview stage, I don't see any problem related to that. It might actually be a cool story to tell during your interview.

Hi Tia,

Usually not a problem at all, as long as the activity does not in any way imply a conflict of interest. 

Moreover, I agree with some of the other coaches, this will actually a big plus in your interviews, as consulting firms love candidates who take initiative and show drive & practical experience outside of corporate job  and academics. Hence, make sure you use this experience to your advantage!

As long as your social media activity is responsible, honest and inclusive, there should be no problem at all.

Discuss any conflicts/policies etc with HR once you are at offer stage
