Last minute advice for 2 MBB final rounds

I have today my McK final round (3 interviews) and then my BCG final round (2 interviews) and I am honestly super stressed.

I am doing a top MBA (think Stanford, Wharton, etc) and before I work at Kearney, so this should be a smooth transition, but I had basically no time to prepare on the vacations as I got very sick (nothing that can “kill me” but for 2 weeks I was recovering from a surgery).

Both firms unfortunately could not change the interview timeline as  the offices I am applying (NY, SF) are very very sought after by students and I just want to make sure I don't lose an amazing opportunity. Any tips?

I feel that if I go relaxed I can do this well!

Hi there,

Congrats on making it to the final round in both, well done. I hope everything went well with your surgery.

With regards to last minute tips, I think the best mindset you can do this with is relying on your expertise. You currently work as a management consultant in one of the well-known firms and have the required problem solving and communication skills to perform well from that daily experience. Period.

Make sure you leave holiday and surgery behind you and get into working mode again. You can do this as a confident and adequately relaxed consulting professional. Make the most out of the experience and have pleasure while engaging with the interviewer.

Best luck & fingers crossed ?

Hey there!

First off, try to breathe and relax. Think about what works in your favor:

  1. You're already on a great path with your MBA and your experience at Kearney. That background has set you up for success in these interviews.
  2. You have already passed the first round which means you have all what it takes. According to popular advice the second round is not harder, it's just a different set of eyes: https://www.preplounge.com/en/consulting-forum/mckinsey-second-round-13792

Now, about your preparation: since you've had limited time due to your surgery recovery (glad to hear you're on the mend, by the way), let's focus on quality over quantity.

I recommend you read through two specific articles for your McKinsey interview prep. They're insightful and will help you get into the right mindset quickly. Since you're short on time, these articles can serve as a focused, last-minute prep.

McKinsey Case Interview: https://www.preplounge.com/en/mckinsey-interview
McKinsey Personal Experience Interview: https://www.preplounge.com/en/mckinsey-pei

As for the interviews themselves, trust in your experience and education. You understand the consulting world, and that's a huge advantage. Be confident in your problem-solving and analytical skills.

All the best,

Florian

Hi there!

At this point, you can change much about your skills.

So the only thing you can improve to put you at an advantage is your mindset.

One thing you can do is take a long walk and reflect on the top things that you have achieved in life that you are most proud of.

They could refer to you getting into a certain university, or winning a contest, helping a family member or doing an act of charity. Basically, moments that show your best self. Try and visualise these to get the most effect out of them.

Aside from this, remember that by having worked already in consulting, you have already been ‘vetted’ by some of the firms, which means there should be no objective reason why these interviews shouldn't work out.

I wish you all the best!

Hi there,

Q: I have today my McK final round (3 interviews) and then my BCG final round (2 interviews) and I am honestly super stressed. Any tips?

Not sure if by “and then my BCG final” you mean the same day - hopefully not. Having both finals on the same day would be quite intense.

In general, this is what I recommend (if they are both today, disregard “practice” and "sleep" sections):

  1. Mental attitude: It’s great if you get the offers. But if you don’t, it won’t be the end of the world. If you really want McKinsey or BCG, you can get there by interviewing again in 1-2 years if you don't succeed now. Additionally, there might be other/faster ways to get where you want in your career. If you see this as “the only option in your life” this would be (i) most likely, not factually true and (ii) increase stress a lot.
  2. Practice: Stop doing cases 24 hours before the interview and just review past material to avoid excessive stress.
  3. Sleep: Go to sleep early, doing something relaxing before that.
  4. Energy: Have some snacks ready for breaks.
  5. Breaks: Take a break between interviews if you have some time to relax a bit (eg. listen to music, read something).

Good luck!

Francesco

Hi there,

PSA from others: Please avoid this situation (e.g. needing last minute advice).

For the individual asking this question, here's my advice: This is the most important moment of your life.

Until the next one.

Yes, we care about this. But when was the last time you thought about your SAT? Your GMAT? Your college applications? Your first job interview?

Never!

Life will move on, no matter what happens here :) Deep breaths :)
