How to answer: what's your role in a team?

Hi experts, I believe interviewers are tired of hearing “I'm the leader of the team”. Any suggestions on showing I'm a doer, a facilitator, a team-worker but also have leadership skills, rather than just a member/follower?

Thanks a lot.

Hi there,

You've actually inadvertently hit the nail on the head here!

Leadership is not about being the leader of a team. Leadership is about showing leadership characteristics.

Taking initiative and moving a team forward, whether you're the official leader or not.

My best leadership story was one where I led a severly failing 20 person project to success despite not being the official project manager.

Yes to you grabbing any story of yours where you've moved a group forward through leadership!

This is a common mistake people make - a role in the team is not the same as the title in the team. For example on a project team your title could be Associate but your role could be to own the analytical model for xx and yy.

If you are answering simply the question “Whats your role in a team” - they you need not unnecessarily defer to leadership.

You can simply go ahead and describe your role in the team without much fuss. For example: If you were the main consultant on the project - you could very well say that you were responsible for overseeing overall content creation on the project. You could highlight your coordinating skills, your collaborative skills, and your project management skills.

Why don't you DM me some of your instances and we can come up with a good answer.

Two thoughts on this:

  1. As a general rule, your answer should showcase how you enable / empower others in order to get the job done.
  2. Specifically for Bain. Bain has a kind of “motto”, which is "a Bainie does not let another Bainie fail." I am sure you can use this line of thought in order to come up with a couple of great examples.

Hello,

Something that often comes up in my work with candidates is that leadership roles are not the same as leadership positions - that is, you don't have to be a manager/director/team leader to show leadership qualities . So that's one important thing to note. Rather than going for stories that focus on your position, try to find experiences where you took on a leadership role regardless of your official work title. Focus your story on what you did, rather than your official responsibilities. The leadership will come through.

I would also say that the other qualities you pointed out - a doer, a facilitator, a team-worker - are also very important. There are ways of exhibiting leadership in each of those roles (e.g. a leader could be the one facilitating the conversation to make sure all voices are heard). Alternatively, you could have a top “leadership” story and a top “facilitator” story, and do your best to mention both in your interview to make sure the interviewer gets to see different sides of you (i.e. no need to bring every single question back to leadership. If you've had a chance to talk about leadership already, you could try to bring in experiences that focus on how well you work on a team next).
